Training your spouse
Question:
I currently have my CDL but my wife wants to get hers so we can drive as a team. We are looking for a company that will allow me to train her after she finishes driving school. It would also be helpful to find a company that offers training for pay for tuition. I have been 2 plus years OTR. I currently get good miles and pay but company doesn't have teams. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Answer: I've been told by a few od the drivers that they were allowed to be a trainer for their spouse. And if you don't mind taking your time off at home ( they only let you take time off at the place you call home, unless they've changed it since I left) then they do run teams well. A lot is drop and hook, if your good at being on time. Wish you luck in finding the right company. Answer: First off. Have you ever spent weeks at a time with your wife in a truck? If you have not. Do not even think about training her. Also, how have other things gone in your relationship that you tried to train? Have you ever trained you wife to drive a tractor, car, boat? Have you ever worked on a home improvement with each other? These may sound like simple things that have nothing to do with learning to drive a truck. I drive team with my wife. I had to train her. She had 5 years every day in the truck before she got her CDL. We thought we were ready for me to train her. It was dang near a split up. You will soon find that more truckers have ex wife drivers then you think. Make sure you TWO are into it. It would prob be MUCH better to let her go drive somewhere else for 6 months to a year. Let her drive there. Get her experience. Then get into a truck with each other. It could save your relationship.202 N Main Street Summerfield Il 62289 TRUCK PARKING AVAILABLE! Answer: Also what company are you with that dosn't have teams? Must not be a OTR company. JB Hunt, Schneider, Swift and all the sorts like them will let you train you spouse. It isn't for everyone.. I for one would much rather work with a trainer person then train my spouse. It can end your relationship fast.202 N Main Street Summerfield Il 62289 TRUCK PARKING AVAILABLE! Answer: I have to agree with Daytrader to a degree, think carefully about it. I have no experience about trucking with a spouse but anything beyond teaching her to make coffee has been sometimes dangerous. We trained together for a franchise business. Made it but had trouble. Tried to run the business together, ended in failure & was full of conflicts. I have to try to teach her to drive a car now & I'm not looking foreward to it. She tried to teach me Japanese language after we first married & almost had a quick divorce!!! Be careful. Even if you have a good relationship it could be trouble. Two heads are not better than one when they are both connected to the same body. Answer: Thanks for all the replies. Just to clear things up a little my wife would already have got her CDL from a driving school. So we would be starting off as a team. She would just not have the experience that I have. We have found a lot of places don't accept new students and the pay at other companies for teams isn't that great and if the pay is good then the benefits aren't that great. Doesn't seem we can get everything we are looking for. Good pay, benefits and miles. Guess asking for to much!! Answer: Most of the teir 1 and teir 2 companies have fine benifits. The miles are great for most teams. The pay varies on experiance. A new team should be able to get .38 cents to the truck and 20k miles a month easy. Some places even require the teams to be able to run 20k. I am ny wife do not like to run that hard. We are happy with only 4250 miles a week. Makes for a easy week and the pay is fine.202 N Main Street Summerfield Il 62289 TRUCK PARKING AVAILABLE! Answer: US Xpress is very supportive of teams, and has a school. You can train your wife (if you can get past what the others above have noted). 100% autoshift transmissions, too. $5,000 sign-on bonus for teams.
