poll, happy with trucking
Question:
Most the people on this forum seem to be unhhapy with there career choice. Is this the case? or are happy with it overall?

Answer:
I've been very happy with it since I found the right company.you define the moment or the moment defines you.

Answer:
I've been drving for about 14 yrs... and I Still Luv Every Mile of It!
For the past 2yrs I've been pulling an end dump locally...It's BORING & Not what I want to do, so I'm currently researching reefer carriers to go OTR with.

Answer:
If you dig into it enough you will find a great deal of the unhappiness can really be traced back to a dispatcher/fleet manager who to most drivers is the company. The rest of it seems to fall into being unprepared to make the changes needed to fully adapt to a driving job, particularly OTR.
I have never had a problem dealing with the hassles of the job itself, but when you start viewing your supervisor as the enemy it quickly becomes too much to handle.
Answer:
I am ...My Own Boss....and that makes me very happy.

Answer:
I have been driving for just over 15 years, this time. I liked it when I was a company driver, I really liked it when I bought my first truck, and now with the present truck I own and the company I'm leased on to, I can honestly say I love it.
I don't know if I could EVER go back to being a company driver, as I like being able to have a role in making the decisions on wnich loads I haul. I know for a fact that I'll NEVER be able to do the 9-5 type job, as I don't play well with others and abhor someone looking over my shoulder to see if I'm doing the work like I'm supposed to.
If I had to get off the road due to health reasons, I might go back to selling real estate, as that was interesting. If I did that, I'd have to learn to suck up again, as the customers, both sellers and buyers need the old ego stroked quite a bit.....lol.

Answer:
I have been driving for about 4 years now. The first two otr and the second two years local. I love every minute of it. I just can't see myself doing anything else.

Answer:
I'm happy with my company. The 2 weeks my FM was gone I hated it, for the simple fact I was on another persons board.
I had a job offer making .39 cpm, still thinking of looking into that. Yes Bob, I know I would be a fool to not pursue the job offer.
Things are going good despite being here in Ontario and taking my random drug test. 15 cups of water and 3 hours late...

If I made a list of positives and negatives about this job, the negatives would be ten times longer than the positives. But I love the positives so much they outweigh any amount of negatives. I can't imagine doing anything else.
Once a person finds their own little niche including the right company and type of trucking, it can make all the difference in the world.
I've been driving for 6 years o/o for 4. Wouldn't trade it or even think about doing anything else. I started late when I was 38. So I've done other stuff and realize there's strife in every line of work. But the positives still outweigh the negatives!
This forum may not give that impression because we are discussing the problems we are having. Every job has problems and b.s. You can still love this job and complain about how things are going. Besides some of us (not me!) love to complain.http://truckingblog.net

You cannot compare this "job" to ANY OTHER job in the entire country.....Why?
Simple....this is the only "job" where the workforce is totally and exclusively denied and exempt from any and all rights and protection afforded by the Fair Labor Standards Act. This is the root of all the "complaints"
**
So go ahead and paint a rosey picture and sweep all the bad stuff under the rug by the idiotic statement that people just like to complain.

If people at your local Home Depot were forced to put in a couple of hours per day for free, everyday, ......when they started to complain we could just say that they like to complain.

You guys in this newbie forum are a joke.

Answer:
Just speaking for myself, I don't work a couple of hours for nothing. When I work, I get paid, when I drive, I get paid, when I wait, I get paid.
If you're unloading your truck and not getting paid and having to log it as lines 1 or 2, maybe you should find someone elsel to drive for, because that's the only way that problem is going to be fixed. Is if no one does it. If they want stuff loaded they either do it themselves or pay.
From your last comment, I'm just going to assume that you're an old fart that puts up with crappy warehouses, cheap freight and then sits at the counter and complains about it, day after day after day. Has never done anything else and probably can't do anything else. So can't compare this to anything else. All you know is that this sucks. You don't know what to do about it, expect someone else to fix it for you, but it just sucks. Life sucks and you should just do something else.
Fix it, change it, or just sit there and accept it and complain about it, Which one are you?
Don't like us newbies? For you that's anyone that hasn't driven over 20 years, right? Do us a favor and retire and leave this mess that you "veterans" have left us. This "problem" didn't happen overnight. It happened on YOUR watch. What did you guys do to fix it? You just kept on doing things the same way, every day, doing nothing. Thanks.http://truckingblog.net

You DO realize there ARE companies out there who do pay well, pay for loading, unloading.. detention pay... even if you're an owner operator?( and yes, I know I drive a straight truck, but there are many tractor trailor drivers here too)
It amazes me how people complain, but I bet they've never investigated to see where the money is.
For every person who is on this board complaining, there is another who's making good money and loves his job.. problem is, the mal-contents talk the most about their job.
MY job pays well, I go home when I want, I have paid detention, paid loading/unloading.. non-forced dispatch.. and I love my job...
I'm sorry.. is that being too rosey?
Did I mention I love my job?
Great.. I just realized now Chad will ask me how much I CLEARED this week....

Answer:

You just like to complain

Answer:
Just a question, who doesn't complain?
Everyone in any workforce has complained once or twice. That is why this is America. We have a right to complain, to speak, to (edited) and to tell the old disgruntled men and women to go RETIRE.
If a person stopped complaining then there is a problem. Not one person is perfect, no job is perfect regardless of what it is.
This newbie forum might be a joke. If it is such a thing, then why do you even bother reading it?
The newbies or soon to be drivers come in here to ask questions and NOT to be belittled.

I'm sorry, but that kinda just rubbed me the wrong way.Sweet Whiskey

Answer:

Another loud mouth Newbie that seems to lack the knowledge of
who and what caused the problems faced today.
You seem to have a "good job"(depending on pay) and you can thank
the "old guys" that fought for what you recieve. The "Veterans" have left the industry to the mopes that are willing to drive for minimum wage $.30cpm
jobs and shun the Union idea.

That's an astute and factual observation for the most part cheapshot.
