laptop wireless
Question:
I have a dell c600 and called verzion and they have a plan that cost 79.99 per month for the unlimited internet servie for my laptop while I am on the road. Can someone tell me if I need anything else to make this work? Maybe a wireless card that goes into my laptop or?
I heard I need a pcmica card from netgear that has an 802.11 or? PLEASE HELP ME FOR WHAT I NEED. THANKS

Answer:
Depends what kind of wireless access they mean.
You're either looking at an 802.11 card for wifi access at truckstops, or a card that connects to your cellphone to dialup at slooooow speed almost anywhere.Professional Driver's Association UK Member

Answer:
that is the plan i have. verizon can set you up with all you need.
i burned out 3 qual com/kyocera handsets, before i got the sierra 555 air card.
zone alarm, for some reason, is a major conflict, with their service. i couldn't just disable it. i had to delete it, entirely.Government Ain't YO' Friend. Nor your Servant.

Answer:
I use the Verizon service and have a Sierra Wireless Aircard 555. Earlier this year it was $350 for the card, but they had a $100 rebate. The service works well, but if I didn't absolutely have to have it, I'd probably use truckstop wi-fi as it's faster and cheaper.

Answer:
From what I understand, truckstop wi-fi is limited to one brand of truckstop or another. So, if I had an account at the Flying-J, I could not use it with the TA wi-fi service. Is there a wi-fi service that is compatible with all truckstops?

Answer:
yes I found a new card on ebay for 39.00 and verzion for 79.99 unlimited. I think that is the way to go!

Answer:
Not really driver 8....though truckstop.net (or whatever it is that Pilot has) is suppose to have a deal with both Petro and Pilot to provide wi-fi.......dont know if it ever went through or not however.
Answer:
I'm using ton services wifi. They cover all Flying J's and most Petros and it's $199 a year unlimited access where Trucknet (Pilot) is $299 year. Also if your stuck at a Pilot and need to get online then just pay for 1 day or 1 hr.Henry Ford

Answer:
I picked up a US Robotics Aircard at Best Buy for $60 that covers 802.11b and 802.11g for the wifi service.Henry Ford

Answer:
If you Don't want to be "TIED" to a truckstop, you could get AT&T's Wireless Internet service or Verizon's Wireless Internet service or Sprint's Wireless internet service.

Answer:
I have the Verizon service. All you need is the card for it. Be aware though, that the price they quoted you is not everything you will pay. You will also be charged taxes and fee's, (911 etc) So you will actually be paying closer to $100 a month. All in all it is a decent service, faster then dial up, not as fast as broadband though. I would compare the speed to ISDN. Most of the major interstates are covered, but dont think that you will be able to connect EVERYWHERE.
The truck stop WI-FI plans are good also. Yes you pay more for the trucktop.net service, but IMHO it seems to have a better infracstructure then the FJ service.
Are you already a driver? Wheter you are or not, a choice of what truckstop WIFI plan to go with needs to depend on where you usually fuel at. It would not make any since to sign up for the FJ service if you never fuel there. A good read for you would be to do a search for hightech trucking on these forums.

Answer:
I have used truckstop.net and it works well mostly and is good at pilot loves Petro and others near you but I have a sprint phone and use it mostly as it will work on the road in most places I am just going to get my WYFI by the hour or day as I need it for big files.

Answer:
I use AT&T's Wireless Internet.($80 per mnth for UNLIMITED megabyte service)
I use a Sony Ericsson, aircard.(regularly $250, but I signed a 2yr contract, so I got the card FREE.)

Answer:
I use a wireless card at almost all the truck stops. Flying J, T/A, and truckstop.net is growing through out the country.
I don't subscribe at the monthly rate since I would actually be wasing money if I bought all three plans.
Normally, I wil log into the system(s) once or twice a week, check mail and messages and then disconnect. Normally I buy the one day service ($5.95 - $3.25) depending on the network I'm accessing at the time.I ride for those who can't! POW/MIA - You are NOT forgotten!!

Answer:

You need the card that Verizon says you need... either research thier website or give them a call. I believe that is going to be a Sierra Aircard but that's just from memory. This card will be expensive.
Any type of 802 LAN card is not going to work with the Verizon service. Wireless LAN is a different animal from the service that the cell phone companies provide.
The cellular solution (Verizon, ATT, Sprint) will be much slower than the truckstop (LAN) solution, but it will work over a much broader area.
