August 17th it is....
Question:
Got the loan, just have to fill out the paperwork. Start August 17th, 4 days a week for 5 weeks. Truck Driving Academy outta Sacramento, Ca. Answer: Anyone heard anything about TDA? Anyways...what was the hardest to learn? Trip Planning? HOS? Backing? Shifting? From what I have read here it seems that backing is the most diffcult to learn. Guess I just gotta practice, practice and practice some more. Thx in advance. Anyways...catch ya later. Answer: *BUMP* Answer: Feeling a little abandoned there? Enjoy the quiet, it is rare around here. Don’t know much about trucking schools, I went through a company school. I did great with backing and struggled with shifting. I still to this day can’t figure out split sleeper birth. I think it is a psychological block. I need my 8 hours of continuous sleep. Trip planning was a no-brainer for me. As you noted, practice. I would add: practice practice practice!!! All those fun things you can do with your off time will be available when you’re done with school. My whole class graduated, but the first two that left trucking were the ones that went out partying after class. Practice whatever you struggle with. Good luck, -JHappy Dwellers Society Company Driver Division Answer: I don't know how 'good' any driving school is, never been to one. The hardest to learn? Well, to be honest, it could be any portion of driving and the associated tasks. It all depends on how 'easy' you grasp and learn 'new things'. Backing is kinda like playing billiards, except harder. Serious though, like billiards, backing is a lesson in Geometry. In billiards, the ball ain't going in the hole unless you hit it just right. In trucking, the trailer ain't going in 'the hole' unless you hit it just right. Answer: Speaking of which (not to hijack this thread), did you get your truck fixed? A couple of nuts & bolts, a few loving 'taps' with a hammer and mine is as good as new. Of course, it's a Century so 'good as new' isn't saying much. As for the original question, backing seems to be the biggest problem for most people and certainly, the biggest worry. In many respects, I think that new drivers tend to psych themselves out when it comes to backing and that's probably because so many drivers tend to see it as a sign of skill. Obviously, it is but hitting the dock elegantly isn't early as important as getting down the road without killing someone. Answer: OUCH!!!!!!
