Is it okay to be "Mr. Snitch?"
Question:
This question is prompted by the interesting thread about Fat Daddy Trucking (over in the Roundtable). If you see a truck that appears to be a danger to safety, is it okay to turn that driver/company in to the DOT? If so, then how does one go about it, anyway? Answer: Let your conscience be your guide. I would suggest, however, that if you do report what you consider to be a "danger to safety" to the appropriate authorities, you refrain from posting about it on truck.net unless you feel the need to call attention to yourself. Look in the front section of your Motor Carrier's Atlas to find the telephone numbers of the D.O.T. for the various states. Answer: Driver 8, There is a difference between being a "snitch" and being a professional member of the industry. A snitch "tattles" for self gain. It could be for "brownie points" or as a vendetta. A professional member will report safety issues for no other reason than protection of the general public. My suggestion... look at your motives, then decide. 1-888-DOT-SAFT or Safety Violation Hotline WebsiteBen Franklin Answer: I suppose whether to report or not is a judgement call each person has to make for themselves. It is certainly not a bad thing to get an unsafe vehicle or driver off the road. Answer: Calling in on a driver is a 'judgement call' on your part. If I see a driver blatantly screw up, I'm talkin to the point where it is totally unsafe or careless, I will call the Safety Director for the company. Been there, Done that..........several times! Answer: I pretty well agree with what has been posted here already. You need to think about why you think that driver needs reporting. Is it just because you got mad that he passed you, or is it because his/her driving is really causing a major safety hazard for everyone else. I wont call in a driver for speeding, but if that driver is tailgating, cutting people off, and things like that then yes I will call in. As to who to call. You need to make a decision about how critical it is that this type of driving stops. (or whatever action it is that you observe). If it is a moving hazard that may get someone hurt or killed then your best bet is to call the police and let them handle it. If it is something you witnessed in a truck stop or warehouse then the persons safety department is your best bet. Copyright ? 2006 - 2007 www.thankhealth.com Privacy Policy
