Hello board
Question:
Hello Board!
Just registered after spending several weeks lurking about this board and others.
Despite all of the generally negative posts about trucking as a career. I have decided to join the ranks of novice steering wheel holders.
School starts with Roehl 12/30 and I can hardly wait! I decided on Roehl for many reasons including cost and length of training, wages and benefits and they are one of the smaller BIG companies and privatly owned. I'll work my (!) off for a year and move on if its not working out.
I've done the white collar gig for many years in retail and it is past time for a change....and the road has been calling for a very long time.
Good, Bad or Ugly ya just never know till you try!

I jumped in at the same age and made a home for myself in trucking. You might too!
At least you arent a starry eyed kid blowing smoke up his own arse!
Keep us updated and the Best of Luck to you! TC

Answer:
Welcome Wiz. Decent starting company and in a short time you'll either love it or leave it.
On the negative side, which I'm known for,
that's a strange time to start training.

Answer:
Yup a real strange time to learn to drive truck, mostly because of inclement weather.
The funds cushion is there, its the slow season in my current occupation so its a littler easier to leave without creating massive disruption for them.
I figure learning in the snow will help me to be a better driver right from the start. If you can handle the worst the rest is a piece of cake.

Answer:
Good luck Wiz,
From what I have read on here I have to agree that Roehl is as good a company as any to start with.
The only way you will ever know if you enjoy the trucking lifestyle is if you give it a shot. Like has been said on here its not for everyone. But at least you are going in with some idea of what to expect. Every job you will ever have has its good and bad. Its all about attitude as to how anyone will handle it.
I have been aprehensive about starting in the winter too. But with my situation its the only time to start and like you said if you can get through the winter you have seen the worst the job has to offer.
Keep us updated on how you like roehl

to TruckNet and the wonderful world of trucking. If you have a spouse I would suggest you have them sign up also so that there is a support system in place when you start your new adventure. Friends and family are great, but it helps to have folks that have been there done that to talk to.
