CDL Driving School
Question:
Hi,
Does anyone have any info on Georgia Driving Academy in Conyers, GA ? I am considering this school, but do not want to throw away money if it is a "CDL Mill".
Thanks...

Answer:
What do you consider a CDL mill?
Im my book they are any school that dosen't get you road ready.
Most of your schools will only help you get your CDL. Tha is it. They help you pass the test.
I would consider a carrier school. Before I went to a school. Almost every carrier will still make you go though there training. Like 1 week in class and 2 weeks with a trainer. Might as well go straight to the carrier.
Let they foot the bill. You will have to work there 1 year, but that is no thing. You will want to work at your first carrier 1 year for experiance any how.202 N Main Street

What company is this ?
Newbie company training programs are 6-8 weeks on average after you complete a basic driver training course and get your CDL.
Your best bet to find out what you are looking at for this school it to go and visit it. See what kind of instruction the students are getting. Talk to students who may be getting ready to graduate.
A decent school will help you learn and understand the HOS rules, log books, trip planning, as well as the the rules and regs associated with driving a truck. They will do all this in a classroom environment. They will also help you understand what you need to know to get your learners permit and all your endorsements.
You should have at least 2 weeks of hand on training. This should include at a minimum of at least 12 hours (or 500 miles) of actual driving time in real world situations (actually driving in traffic).
Some other important questions to ask is:
What happens if you fail the state skills tests? Will they continue to train you until you do pass at no charge?
What companies routinely hire from the school? Verify this by calling those companies and asking. Also if there is a list of companies you are interested in working for call them and ask if they accept students from the school you are planning on attending.
A decent school will provide you with a foundation which will be built upon at the next phase of your driving career which is the On the job training you will recieve from your first company. While there are some companies out there that will put a newbie in a truck without training avoid these companies like the plague.
Answer:
Many companies have a 2 week with the trainer. Some have 4 weeks. Some have 4 x 4 programs.
Schneider has a 2 week with trainer. Can be 1 week if you can get a trainer to sign off on you.
US Express, has a 4 x 4 program last I looked.
I belive werner and Crete are both 2 week programs. You have to go to Crete selected school.202 N Main Street

When choosing a driving school, you should look at the following??
What is the course curriculium. Does it have defensive driving , Speed and Space management, Is the training one on one, by that I mean all time in the truck on the range and the road. Some schools will tell you that the training is one on one, when actually it is only one on one traing on the road. This means you will have to share an instructor with other students on the range. Sage Technical Services is good at this one.
You have to pass your range test before you can take your road test, so if your sharing instructor time with other students, and your having problems that one on one instructor time on the range can mean the difference in passing your state skills test.
The other item already mentioned here is if I fail the first skills test, will the school continue to retrain and test me till I pass? Once again Sage Technical Service is good at abandoning it's students after one test. So this is an important question to ask any school when making your selection. Any trucking school that does not stick with you and help you retrain and retake your skills test is just a Driving school mill.
Also, ask what the class success and failure rate is for the school. Remember, if the school your looking at has a low success rate, chances are that school is a mill, and you want to steer clear of them.
Catch you on the flip!

Answer:
werner has 275hrs of training then you take road test or do half of 275 (137.5) go home for one week get new trainer go back on road finish other 137.5hrs
Answer:
Cretes is longer than 2 weeks Joe truck driver could tell you how long but I think it's 6-8 weeks. I don't know of any companies that only have a 2 week OJT program for new drivers.
