Massachusetts Ducks play Chicken.
Question:
I was driving down the Mass pike las' week at Framingham, when I see what looks like a snake coming across the shoulder, about 300 yds ahead of me. All three lanes are crammed with 65mph traffic. I soon see it is a momma duck, with 4 or 5 baby ducks following her single-file. "Oh, no...", I think, "I don't want to take-out a little duck family." I start slowing down and edging over close to the middle lane. But since I don't want to take out the baby human in the SUV next to me, I hold it there as long as I can. The little ducks are just starting to cross into my lane and I barely miss them with my tractor. Unfortunately, they didn't stop marching in time, and my trailer tandems caught the momma. Wings were flapping in my west coast mirror and I saw other traffic dodging the birds. When I drove back past that point a few minutes later, I only saw one carcass so the babies must not have been hit. They probably wandered off. Regardless, I figured they didn't have much of a chance without their momma. It bothered me for the rest of the day.
Today, while driving about a half-mile from that spot, what do I see? Another duck family, marching across the shoulder and headed towards the concrete barrier in the center of the turnpike, just like the other ones did! The timing was almost exactly the same! But this time, no one was in the lane next to me and I was able to change. I also gave several short blasts on my air horn, and at the last minute, momma did a quick U-turn. In my mirror, I saw the last of the babies scurrying back into the woods, under the guard rail.
I've also had close calls with deer in that area, and was able to avoid them.
The moral of the story: always look ahead, and be aware of your surroundings. Although I didn't have many options in the first instance as far as the ducks were concerned, I knew the SUV was next to me, which avoided a potential accident that could've resulted from a snap decision.
Answer:
Maybe they need to post duck crossing signs.
Recently I experienced a kamakazee goose in Wi. Sure made a mess of my windshield.

Answer:
I had the same thing happen in South Dakota. Mama duck tried to lead half a dozen baby ducks across I-90. I just barely missed 'em.
But that's nothing compared to the animals I've had to dodge since coming to Oklahoma for truck school.

Answer:
Something like that happened on I84 going northerly bound. In the road construction by the bends I noticed something LARGE. No it wasn't a moose or elk, but a nice large buck staring at me in the middle of the interstate. I thought to myself, ok don't freak out and don't swerve. I kept it straight, blew the air horn (which DOEN'T work to scare deer).
I looked over and stared the buck straight in the eyes on the driver side. The worst part was the middle of the night dark. I don't drive at night unless I have to for that specific reason.
I am going to install deer sirens, or those deer things that usually come in handy alot.
Just think I could of had deer sausage and deer hamburger and deer jerky. I also would have wrecked my truck and been totally shocked for a long time.
I'll take what happened very serious and hope I don't come in contact with anything like that again.

Answer:
just north of Dunnigan, CA...He was chowin' down on some road kill when I guess I startled him and instead of flapping in the opposite direction he flew smack into my windshield and got stuck in the fairing. Took me half an hour to get all the bird particles off my truck....

Answer:
I had one of those Kamikaze geese(as Wiz so aptly put it) smack my windsheild once too. Luckily it hit the curve on the right side of the windsheid and took out the mirror only, the windsheid didn't get hurt. Good thing I had the foldable mirrors on my century. just had to pull over for a minute and pull the mirror off the passenger window, It had some broken plastic on the back but that's a cheap and easy fix.. Scared the living Sh*T outta me when it hit though.... never saw it coming.
