Which company sponsored training?
Question:
I have decided to get a CDL and drive for a living. I have looked at several programs and originally believed Schneider was the way to go. Before I commit to anything I'd appreciate any feedback on company sponsored training. I want to get with someone who will teach me how to work smart. I don't mind working hard when that is the only way however I'd rather be trained well to be able to identify opportunities to work smart instead of hard.
On a second topic, it appears JB Hunt pays extremely well. At this point I am thinking it would be good to get a year or two experience and then move to JBH. Opinions? Other companies I should look at as a 12-24 month goal... provided nothing changes during that time frame?
Lastly, for this post anyway, if one could purchse a new truck of their choice and pay for it in full at time of purchase so there's no monthly payment would it be better after a year or so experience to purchase a truck outright and then independent contract instead of staying a payroll driver?

Answer:

Only you can really decide that correct route to go on this. Examine each and every company you are thinking about working for and then decide which comes closest to meeting your needs at this time.

Dont be putting the horse before the cart here. Worry about getting that 1-2 years in first and then re-examine where you are and where you want to be. This industry is somewhat fluid in hiring policies, pay scales etc. Also remember that promises of "high pay" may not really translate into bigger paychecks.

In my opinion you are going to need 4-5 years of experience before deciding this. Being an owner/operater means running a business, and with all the potential pitfalls in the trucking industry you will need to have an excellent understanding of how the industry operates in order to have a real chance of succeeding.

I updated the original post to add some more detail and make it a little clearer. I appreciate all feedback. Thank you.
