CB Radios
Question:
Help in picking an inexpensive CB that has a decent range and won't cost an arm an a leg. Where should I look? Thanks. xmtnman2 malkemus@wans.netNever know the Difference !!! Answer: Pawn Shops CB Shops(many CB shops sell used or new CBs at reasonable prices) If you are doing your on-the-job-training & you're with a trainer.....Listen to the CB when you get near trkstps & you'll usually hear someone selling one for a reasonable price. Camping/Sporting goods supply stores(Academy, etc) Wal-Mart/K-Mart/Target, etc Radio Shack Electronic stores ***Anywhere EXCEPT at a TruckStop!!! Answer: http://www.truckersstuff.com/store/show_product/?product_id=6255342 Uniden also makes some decent radios, there is a nice selection on the site. I used to use a Uniden 510XL that was peaked and it would talk as good or better than the high dollar units. The fancy ones tend to have a lot of whistles and bells that you rarely use. Here's link for the 510..... http://www.truckersstuff.com/store/show_product/?product_id=6331383 The guy who runs this site is CGI Red Dog, he's on here somewhere. Answer: I still got an old Cobra I bought new some years ago for $59 retail. Works good enough; it only stays on for the weather and occasionally for directions or an exit number for something. It's easy enough to do away with one altogether, given the deluge of morons blathering away on them nowadays. If you just have to have one to make you feel like a real truck driver be sure and get one with the weather channel feature. I use those channels more often by far than the idiot chat channels. Your attenna is the biggest deal, so learn all you can about that aspect. A $30 radio with a good proper antenna set up will be much better than an $800 rig operated by a complete idiot. Answer: For any driver that is not doing some kind of linehaul or dedicated where they are going to the same places every day and know they do not need a CB then yes you could go radioless. However for the irregular route driver a CB is pretty much a neccessity as many shippers and recievers will stage incoming trucks and use the CB to give out dock assignments. If you do not have one then you end up having to stand around waiting for the assignment and then walk back to your truck and then put it in the dock. A few places I have been to the staging area was close to a mile away from the docks. That is 110% true. An average radio with a great ant will out perform a great radio with a poor ant system. =============================================== Depending on exactly what you want you can easily get set up with a good radio and antenna for under $200.00. ================================================== My personal choice. Wilson antenna (the 2000 works really good) Uniden PC 78 (do have a weather band version if you want that feature) Astatic Noise cancelling mic. Stay away from Cobra radios that have the Soundtracker function on them. Pure junk. What ever radio you go with have someone who knows what they are doing peak and tune the radio. Make sure the SWR is set properly, and get a good noise cancelling mic for it (either the Astatic or a Roadking). Answer: Bought mine at WalMart for $30 and it can transmit as far as it can hear. Can't understand why anyone wants one of those big radios that can transmit 10 miles. Unless someone 10 miles away has an equally powerful radio, it's a one way conversation. Save your money and invest it in a good laptop.Wayne Answer: From a technical point of view, one CB radio is the same as another as far as transmitting and receiving. Once the 'CB shop' gets their hands on it, you could wind up better or worse (definitely worse in the pocketbook). For a stock truck, with the stock antennas, get a stock radio and it will perform reliably for you. Do have the SWR checked. Do remember to speak clearly and audibly into the stock microphone while holding it close to your mouth. Any money spent beyond that is for testosterone purposes only __________________________ Mark FCC General Radiotelephone License FCC 2nd Class Radiotelegraph License FCC Advanced Class Radio Amateur License FCC General Maritime Distress and Safety System Maintainer License Answer: Speak to other drivers in your company. Let them know that you are in the market for a CB. I bought a used CB from a fellow driver for a whooping $20. He needed money more than his spare radio He hooked it up in my truck and made sure that it was working alright. Ask around; what do you have to lose? Answer: Please dont get one with echo LIARS SUKK Answer: Check these sites out for cb radio and equipment. I ordered a DX-66V from copper and was quite happy with there service. As you will see you can include peak and tune plus other options with your order. www.copper.com www.pacetronics.com PS Order the free catalog from cooper Answer: I got a tweaked cobra 29 classic and one of them new Astatic 3k antaennas with the kinda 'retro' power mike with the ceramic speaker or somthing. So far I transmit good, but everyone else (i rarely use radio) seems to fade out within a mile or so. Answer: Like I said, what good's a radio that can transmit 10 miles unless everyone as one?Wayne Answer: I had a Cobra 29 and could not pick up more than about 1/4-1/2 mile away from it even with a Wilson Fiberglass ant and an SWR of 1.2. Sold that radio to a driver for $25 and went out and bought my first Uniden PC78, hooked it up and straight out of the box I could transmit and recieve 4-5 miles. I would still have that radio if I hadnt dropped it into a huge mud puddle switching trucks. The one I have now is peaked and tuned, upgraded to a Wilson 5000 (was going to get the 2000 but the 5000 was on sale for $15 less ) and I can talk and recieve a good 8 miles on a clear night.
