Inverter question about continous and peak power
Question:
SNI, the max Inverter allowed is 180 watts. Question: Is that 180 continous or peak power. I saw an Inverter it was 300 watts peak but only 75 continous watts. I leave out in my newly assinded Cab over tomarrow. If anyone can help me with this I'd be greatful. Thanks. Answer: When you start a motor, there is a surge of power to get it going, same with a computer, or any other appliance. Once everything is running then it will typically draw a steady current, or power. The continuous power is what the inverter can supply at a steady rate. The peak is a short burst of power that occurs when you first start something plugged in. You need to be concerned about the continuous output. My laptop draws 85 Watts, so a 120 watt continuous rated inverter will work. All appliances have a wattage rating listed on them, that number indicates what the device expects to draw continuously. Be sure the inverted exceeds the appliance wattage requirement by at least 10%, better would be 20%. 300 watts peak with a 75 continuous supply sound suspicious to me. Typically most inverters supply a steady current and will supply a peak power of double the continuous rating. What are you looking to plug in? -JHappy Dwellers Society Company Driver Division Answer: I imagine that is 180 watt continuous. Every company that I have ever worked for that put limits on the inverters that could be installed went my continous ratings, not the peak. Answer: Thanks for the replies. I'm going to plug in a TV/DVD combo that 65 watts. I'm not leaving it pluged in all the time, only when I watch it. I was just wanting to buy the max inverter allowed the first time around. I asked the company once and was told I could have an inverter of 180 watts. I didn't realize inverters had a continous and peak or I would have asked this question is well. Again thanks. Answer: Check the duty cycles also. The cheaper units have very bad duty cycles.202 N Main Street Summerfield Il 62289 TRUCK PARKING AVAILABLE!
