Schools requiring applications to trucking companies?
Question:
My school, Central Tech of Drumright, OK, requires that each student make application to at least six (6) trucking companies. I asked if we are allowed to apply to fewer, and was told, "no."
What's the deal with this? Are they getting kickbacks, or what? There is a woman in my class who will definitely, DEFINITELY be teaming with her husband when school is finished, but she is still required to apply to six trucking companies. That just doesn't make much sense.

Answer:
Seeing as it is Central Tech, you'd be better off to do it. They are regarded as one of the best schools out there.
More than likely they just want everyone to have some type of plan when they graduate. Having a minimum of 6 gives you a bigger picture to look at.
6 apps ain't nothing but a thing......

Answer:
My guess is that they want to make sure that EVERY student who graduates has a job when they are done with school and the more companies you apply to the better chance you have at having at least one if not multiple pre hires when you finish.
In this business, especially when starting out, it is a good idea to leave yourself with options and choices. Do not put all your eggs in one or two baskets.
Since they are not telling you to apply to specific companies I doubt there is any kind of kick back involved.
==============================================
The school I attended did not have any type of limit (min or max) on companies we could apply to, but I put in 14 applications. Would have put in more if I had known about more companies that hired newbies.
Answer:
I PM'd you a few carriers to apply to.
I think I may have sent the links to the carriers' school, so disregard the info about their school & just go to their employment app section.

Answer:

Would you go to a car lot that only had one or two kinds of cars to buy one ? No, you would want to several before deciding on one to pay on for 6 years. A big decision to make. ''

Answer:
As a driving instructor I run into this all of the time. The reason I have students fill out applications is that at least half of the class will wait to apply for employment .
What happens when you graduate and do not have a job lined up? Well if you wait more then four to six weeks before finding a job, as a new driver your skills that are fresh will go to hell. Now you have to take a driving test with that new employer, that is part of the DOT reg requirements. What happens if because you watied to long your not able to pass the road test??
Another senario is that yes belive it or not ! Some students wait months before geting applications out and trying to find employment. If you are new to the industry and wait more then four to six weeks to apply, what happens is your told to take a refresher course. Now your calling the school up and mad as Hell because your not employable.
These are the main reasons that schools make you do applications, so that you have the best chance of becoming employed right after graduation. It also shows that the school takes your employment opportunity seriously even if the student won't!
Catch you on the flip!
