A Typical Carrier Orientation
Question:
In a Different thread someone had asked "What to Expect" during orientation? So I thought I'd start a Different thread. Of course some things will vary with different carrriers.(this is just the basics) ====================================================================== Company Policies Drug test/Physical(if you take prescription meds, make sure you take them with you to the docs in the Original container....if you wear glasses/contacts make sure you have them with you) Road Test BackGround/Criminal Check(good idea to take along the names, addresses & phone numbers of 3-5 people NOT related to you) Past Employment review(must have past 10 yrs of your life documented...NO Gaps...list ALL periods of UNemployment, medical leave, incarceration, etc.) MVR check Issue Employee I.D.(some carriers take photos to put on ID) Get copy of CDL, SSC, birth-cert, etc.(to put in personel file) Get copy of Medical card & Long form(to put in personel file) Get set up with Payroll(if you're getting Direct Deposit, make sure you take a blank Deposit slip or Voided blank check) Cash Advance procedures, getting P.O.#s, reimbursments, tolls, trk washes, etc. Fill out Insurance paperwork(health, life, company...make sure you take ALL of your Beneficiary's info.) Haz-Mat Test(Haz-Mat videos, procedures, placarding, safety, etc.) Listen to Safety dept.(do's & don'ts, safety videos, O.S.& D claims & procedures, etc.) Go over permits in Permit book Load Securement Qualcomm Training Listen to Maint Dept(brake adjustments, breakdown procedures, PM services, national tire accounts, etc.) After you get assigned a trk ask Maint if they'll give you Extra... oil,anti-freeze,headlights,fuses/breakers,marker/clearance lights, belts, hoses, filters, windshield washer fluid,pig-tail,etc. ***After you get assigned your trk.... You may want to buy a filter wrench, set of good Heavy Duty Jumper Cables, 9/16th wrench, WD-40,electrical tape, water for radiator, good tire gauge, phillips & flathead screwdrvrs, bungee cords(all sizes),tire thumper, 5th wheel puller. Lumper Pay(usually 8 out of 10 times whatever the lumper ask) vs Drvr Unload(usually $1.50 for every 1,000lbs...Teams SPLIT the $1.50) Reefer Carriers....... Go over Reefer Operation Reefer Fueling Procedures Pallet Exchange procedures BE SAFE & HAPPY TRUCKING SMYLE! Answer: One thing that can not be stressed enough is to make sure you take along all info needed to fill out and verify a 10 year employment history application. This includes names, addresses, phone numbers and dates of all your employers, schools attended, etc in the last ten years. You will also need to be able to provide proof of any unemployment/self employment for the last 3 years. This can be done via letters, tax records, unemployment benefit statements, etc. Also whatever you do ......do not forget to bring your drivers lisc, soc sec card, and other identification documents. Talk to the recruiter to find out everything you will need to bring. I can not tell you how many people I have seen who have had to run around trying to find someone to fax or overnight mail things to them they have forgotten. Before leaving the house make a list of everything you need and check it over about 20 times. I will always be a mutter trucker at heart. Answer: When you hook to a trailer always check the trailer registeration and then walk to the back of the trailer and verify it with the tag on the trailer. I made the big mistake of not doing this a few weeks ago and got hit with $87 ticket in Colorado. I had no one to blame but myself..I had leased a trailer and I did check the registaration but not the tag..Needless to say they did not match..It was 7pm and the lease company was closed and I was not waiting until 8am the next morning.. But the good thing was the lease company gave me the $87 back Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away Answer: Good advice. Not too sure what it has to do with a typical carrier's orientation, but good advice. I will always be a mutter trucker at heart. Answer: Not a thing but it is something they should go over. Most companies always talk about the permit books and all the things need for the tractor never the trailer Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away Answer: Well, they didn't tell me to bring all that past employment crap but i guess i'll try to write something up just in case. I've had so many stupid little jobs over the past 10 years i'm not even sure i'll remember them all. They were just jobs i worked while in high school and then later in college. Some of the places aren't even open anymore. Don't have much for records either except for the most recent jobs. Going back ten years would have me at 17 years old working as a dishwasher and still in high school. Will they really care about that?? If so, then i'm screwed....lol..... Answer: but thanks for the info..........
