Miles in a Year
Question:
I drove for my first year 125,620 miles. I don't think it's bad at all. That is also with weeks off and days off and such. Does anyone have a opinion?
I am looking for responses, any are welcomed.
Sweet Whiskey

Answer:
and I wouldnt sneeze at it one bit. That averages out to be 2415 miles per week for the year, which is right on target of the industry "standard" or around 2500 miles per week.
I will always be a mutter trucker at heart.

For a 1st yr driver, anything over 10,000 miles a month is pretty good. You're still getting used to the ins and outs of the industry and there are lots of adjustments to make that 1st year.
I did over 159,000 miles last year, but I'm a glutton for punishment and the company I'm leased onto requires we log it how we do it. In other words, if I drive 372 miles in 5 hrs, I log it that way, even though that's 74.2 mph. If I did it, then that's how I log it.
With my personal needs at home, I have to get at least 12,000 miles per month.
BTW, you and I share a birthday. I'm quite a bit older than you, though.
Here's to a great second year for you. --> --> -->

Answer:
120,000 - 125,000 miles is the industry average so you did very well for your first year.
MAGICMAN Over 159,000 miles SOLO is kinda like SLOWLY KILLING yourself. And 372 miles in 5 hours = 74.4 MPH not 74.2
I did a nice leisurely 120,000 miles and grossed $150,000, weekends off and 2 weeks at the cottage, not bad for my first year as an O/O.

Answer:
13500 mi last yr. Got enough time off when I needed it, and still made a decent buck.
Better to have it and not need it as need it and not have it!

Well Happy Belated Bday then Magicman. Libra's are good hearted nice people. Oh did I say that, sheesh I am not nice at all. I am mean mean and more meaner, teehee.
I am glad I am doing average then. Makes it worth while when you know your doing something you like and doing something right. Hopefully this year I can make a few more miles then last. I am not having a bit of problem with this new HOS. In fact, seems Willy load planners might have their heads on straight for once. I think January is always a slow month, but I might be averaging 9000 miles this month. Just depends on where they send me after I leave Syracuse. Hopefully I can get a wing window put back in and a a/c belt on.

Answer:
The last full year I drove I was out for 302 days and did 115,652 miles. No reason to beat yourself to death. Ya, I did get a few crummy loads, but I was rarely tired or beat.

Answer:
Average does not exist except on paper so what you do is what you do. Go with the flow and be safe, attitude is every thing. If you let the miseries of trucking get to you, you’re done. I have seen many good prospective drivers leave trucking because the miseries of trucking overcome them. As I have said before and in other places trucking is not for every one, if you enjoy it then you are a truck driver. Keep up the good work. And keep us posted.

Thanks Joe
I know exactly what you are saying about miseries of trucking. I think that may pertain to people who have families, children or so. I have family but, I have always been a wonderer. I guess my freedom makes truckin it up alot better then some. I am not doing it for money, but more for the country and to have pride in something I love to do.
I would like an explanation on why people in general gawk and squawk at female drivers. I was told today that "you drive a truck, how can you drive something so big?" I can't explain how I can do it, I just do. I can't explain why I do it, it's just feels natural and right. I can't explain why I don't look like a typical trucker. I think we all look the same, exception on the drivers who need a 2 day shower, hehe.
So carry on and be safe,

Answer:
I have had that same question asked of me. My answer is because I can. The reason we can is because of training and practice.
If you like what you do count you’re self blessed by God.

400 miles a day is about normal
at 40cpm=$160.00 a day
at 32cpm=$128.00 a day

Interestingly, while the federal budget was balanced throughout the 1920s, the tax increases of the 1930s coincided with increasingly large deficits. On the campaign trail in 1932, Roosevelt noted: "For over two years our federal government has experienced unprecedented deficits, in spite of increased taxes." Yet, much like Gov. Davis today, Roosevelt decided to increase taxes more. He found out that a tripling of tax revenues did not balance the budget because the deficit soared from $2.2 billion in 1932 to $2.9 billion in 1940.

President Bush's critics say tax cuts are unreasonable because the Congressional Budget Office projects a 10-year deficit of $1.8 trillion. Instead, those critics want to raise taxes, arguing that it will balance the budget. Both President Hoover and President Roosevelt tried such a plan in the 1930s. It failed then. And such a policy today will fail again.

Answer:
Zig,
You do point out alot that driving for Yellow, ABF is better. I do agree better pay and "you" get to be home more. I must be Jewish, because I'd still be able to have more in a checking account then the average Joe. I don't need alot of money or fancy things to get me by. I also don't have alot of the responsibilities that "families" have. I guess that is why working for Shaw just pays off. I have a great FM and that is good enough for me. I also have a truck that doesn't need alot of maintenance. That way I can still rock and roll down the dirt road and not be stuck in a garage. I am a Libra, that means very easy to please and not alot of argument.
You do have a point though. I have one question for you though, are you happy working for whomever it is you work for? Be honest and let me know.

Answer:
In my first full year I drove 126150 miles. Not bad for someone that is home most every night and every other weekend is a 3/4 day weekend.
I love my job and the company I am a part of.
