Concerns i have as a newbie
Question:
Yes im looking for all the help i can with a couple of things that concern me. basically im a newbie and looking to get on with a company that trains u for your cdl like sch, prime, or swift but i've visited many forums and wanted to ask if i would apply to one of these companies for training would my work history be looked at even though im a newbie and 23 years old because i dont have a steady work history kinda up and down. does that make a difference in wheather they accept u into their school also i just got my drivers license like a week ago would that affect my chances of being accepted . because im thinking they might look at me and say well he doesnt have to much experience in driving than we dont need him here. those are my major concerns never been to jail or been in any accidents. any if anyone can help me with some of these questions people that been in the business please leave your replys thanks Answer: I have never worked for any of the large training companies, but from what I have seen, and what you have said, someone should be willing to give you a shot. Have you tried: TruckNet's TruckingJobs.com - Online Applications. «"The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we ALL believe that we are above-average drivers."» Answer: Ok, I did not put the link in so it will work, but you can find it in the lobby under the Newbies section. «"The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we ALL believe that we are above-average drivers."» Answer: Welcome to truck net. Hopefully we can provide you with some answers or insight to your questions and concerns. Please understand that some of what you will hear is fact, and some of it is mere opinion on the part of the posters. As far as you just getting your liscence goes and how that will effect you I honestly dont know. Your best bet would be to talk to a recruiter about it, but I have a feeling that it may not be that big of an issue since driving a truck and driving a car are two different animals. The next piece of advice I have for you is to stay away from lease/purchase programs. These are almost always geared against the driver, and while a few will succeed most fail and some end up losing everything. Prime is a good example of this. Next on the list is getting training. If you can arrange to pay for or finance driving school yourself this is the best way to go. That way you are not locked into any type of contract with a company in case things dont work out for you. Go to Truckschoolsusa.com for some good info on what to look for when choosing and independant school. If you do need to go with a company spomsored school be sure to carefulyl research the company and make sure they are going to meet all or most of your needs for the next 1 or 2 years. Make yourself a list of what is important to you. Carefully compare companies based on things like pay (base pay and accesorial pay like loading/unloading, breakdown, layover, detention pay), hometime, insurance benifits (be sure to ask about premiums) rider policies, pet policies (if you think you may want to either take a pet or have someone go out on the road with you at some point). If at all possible travel to a truck stop and ty talking directly to drivers who are working for the companies you are interested in. Now then as far as your work history goes. As long as you can provide a verifiable work history for the last 3 years, including periods of unemployemnt greater than 30 days, your job hopping wont effect you too bad as you are just getting into the industry. However once in too many driving jobs in any three year period (more than 3) will start to have a negative impact on your abiltiy to get hired. The easiest way to find companies that will hire you in your area is to check your Sunday help wanted ads. Most carriers who advertise in the paper do so on Sundays. Also web sites such as classadrivers.com, 1800drivers.com, not to forgwet the employment section here on trucknet may also help you track down companies that hire from your location at your experience level. Fianlly when applying for work or even just talking to companies trying to get info be honest with them. If you try to hide something there is a good chance that it will come out sooner or later and could very well cause you to loose a job you might have otheriwse obtain becuase they will view you as being dishonest. I hope this helps you some. Feel free to ask your questions. Many here are happy to try to help. Also be sure to use the search function found at the top of the page. Many times any question you have has probably been asked a dozen times already and there may be better answers in past posts than you might get by asking yourself, but as I said you are free to ask anything you want at any time. I will always be a mutter trucker at heart. _________________ One cylinder at a time... Answer: CRST: Strictly teams. When a newbie hires on with them they go through training and then are placed with another driver and run team freight. They do not hire for solo company driver positions. Werner: Last I knew Werner did not have a company sponsored school. They do however have a tuition tuition reimbursment program if they are the first company you hire on with after graduating from an approved driving school. Werner also has the longest OTJ (on the job) training program of approx 8 weeks of any of the companies out there. Biggest draw back is the paperless logging system which might cause you problems later if you switch companies. PAM: They do have company sponsered driving schools. 2 week wonder courses where you will have to have be able to pass your written tests on the first day in order to get your lerners permit. Of course this is true with many of the company sponsered schools. Roehl and Millis are the only two that I know of that may be an exception to this. I am uncertain however if they hire in the NYC area. USA truck: They come and go with the company sponsered driving program. Once again though it is the same type as PAM and am not sure of their exact hiring area. Roehl and Millis. Both are 4 week courses I believe providing both classroom and behind the wheel instruction. Swift: . Will pretty much hire from anywhere in the country. The last I knew they do have a handful of company sponsered driving schools scattered around the country. Schnieder: Pretty much same deal as Swift, though they seem (at least at one time) favor drivers who are 25 or older. While I am unfamilar with the current details of the various programs most if not all do require some sort of down payment or deposit before you attend school. Some of the programs will provide lodging while you attend (included in the service contract) and others it is an extra option though they do have arrnagements for relatively cheap accomadations. In all cases the cost of your meals is your responsiblitly. I will always be a mutter trucker at heart. _________________ One cylinder at a time... Answer: About the "steady work history" issue. Don't worry about it at this juncture. You were not a driver and you could always explain that you've had nothing but trucking on your mind, and nothing else seemed to satisfy you. That's why you are there. --> When you do become a driver...stay at one place for at least a year, and then you can find a company that more suits you, should you become dissatisffied with your initial choice. Do not move around from company to company, or this will hurt you....perspective employers will see you as a "risk" to hire, assuming you will leave them in a short time, as you did to your last couple etc... _________________________ Cover Your Cans People!!! _________________ _______________________________________ It's apparent this place is never going to change....then again; why should it? It gets the clientel it deserves. Bette Midler Answer: Below are a few links to different Millis Info.(nope...No 2wk courses offered.) http://pub89.ezboard.com/bmillis Tnraven's Posts about Millis.(click here) --> Other Posts about Millis.(click here) Answer: They will analize you very well if you let them.
