Difference between a transvestite and a transsexual
Question:
There is a big difference between transvestism and transsexuality and the two should not be confused.
Transvestism (or cross-dressing) is taking physical and emotional pleasure from dressing in the clothes of the opposite sex. Most transvestites are men. But, contrary to what many people believe, transvestites are not necessarily gay. In fact, up to 75 percent of transvestites are likely to be heterosexual (straight), leading otherwise conventional lives.
Transsexualism is altogether more complex. It is a situation where the individual feels that he or she has been born into the wrong sex. These people (and again it is more common in men) do not want to have to masquerade as a member of the opposite sex and some may want a sex-change operation. Some do indeed have the lengthy course of hormone treatment and surgery needed to bring about a sex-change.
I’ve always thought that transvestite and transsexual are both the same until I read the above. The transvestites I see on the streets are actually transsexuals. Hmm.
