Question:
What is the purpose of a toner? Can i use it as a base before applying my acne creams?
Also, what product would you recommend to reduce my pore size?

A toner gives your face a more even tone, closes the pores after cleansing, and some reduces acne too..
Lancome's Tonique Douceur works very well for smoothing and even your skin out, whilst L'Oreal Purezone and Shiseido Pureness work well on acne-proned skin...

The current problem with my skin is that its smooth (due to all the AHA in the creams that i've been using), yet it still doesn't appear good:
Clogged and enlarged pores, red patches below the skin surface
Anyone also encountering this problem?

Sounds like you need exfoliating and maybe Clinique's Pore Minimizer Lotion, but those red patches may be a result of sensitive skin, which will be made worse by exfoliating...
