Mega Men Multi-vitamin
Question:
I'm not sure if this is really on-topic, but if anyone has any experience with this product:

I'd like to know your thoughts. The customer reviews at drugstore.com were so good, that I have already ordered a bottle. I wanted something with the usual vitamins and minerals (especially B-vitamins) as well as L-arginine. L-arginine is best know for helping erectile problems (which I don't have at age 23) but its supposed to promote blood flow to everything, including the brain. So does this look good, or is there something else that I should look into as well?

Answer:
I've used it before. The problem with multi-vitamins is how do you know it's working well. I can show you a bunch of ad-hype studies, etc. Even if it's a pure and good vitamin with way over the top % of the RDA, how do you know your body is absorbing it. I don't have the answers to give you. I've just been trying to eat better and just use a cheap multi-vitamin right now.

Answer:
If you believe you are having problems with circulation, you should discuss this with your doctor. It could be a sign of diabetes, anemia, hemochromatosis, PVD & a number of other disorders that should be ruled out before you begin self-prescribing. =x
If you’re just looking for a multivitamin, this is fine.

Answer:
I don't have any genuine concern about circulation. I have heard that L-arginine is a good thing to take everyday as it promotes brain health via increased circulation. Think of it just like taking ginko or whatever other herbs they say are good for memory and alertness.

Answer:
l-arginine is relatively benign, it won't hurt to give it a try unless you're prone to cold sores, or using nitroglycerin (at 23?). if you're looking to improve circulation to your brain, consider hydergine or nicergoline.

Answer:
I'm assuming you are referring to GNC's Mega Man multi. *This kind is fine, but uses ridiculous amounts of daily values to try and impress you into believing that you are getting more bang for your buck. *The problem with the vitamin is the great contrast in amounts you are getting. *The absurd 1500% (you'll see on the label) daily value is mostly from water-soluble vitamins, meaning your body will simply flush out unused excess when you use the bathroom. *On the other hand, they add trace ingredients like arginine for little more than honestly the sake of putting exotic things on the bottle. Don't let the product knock you off your feet by promising anti-oxidant formulas or amino acid complexes. Arginine and most of the other stuff are in there with undefined daily values just to make a sale. *I promise if you are expecting some kind of miracle to be at work here with the arginine or anything else, it simply won't happen by using this or any supplement. *
Most importantly, DO NOT SHOP AT DRUGSTORE.COM!!! The site is very expensive and I promise you I can find you better products at a better value on different credible sites throughout the Internet. *Other than fragrances, nutrition and exercise is my other major interest and study. *I'd be glad to point you in a better direction and hook you up with some material so you can save a little money and get the most out of arginine or anything that you are interested in. *PM to get in touch. *

Here's a chart comparing MegaMan to a couple others. http://www.geocities.com/newnoiseimage/vitamin.htm
Since I'm about to run out, I just ordered NOW ADAM from http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/now/adam.html I've ordered from them before and have no complaints. They do carry all on the chart except GNC. As you can see, it's all give and take and you probably won't get scurvy no matter which one you choose ;D You might want to pick up some Fish Oil along with your multi.

Answer:
Personally, I wouldn't waste my money on GNC multi vitamins. Taking a simple inexpensive one like Centrum would have the same effect. If you have a solid diet, then you don't really have much to worry about in the first place.
L-arginine is simply an amino acid that's a precursor to NO2 in the bloodstream. It promotes bloodflow since it's a vasodilator. Supplementing with it won't hurt. I personally use it for increased vascularity and pumps in the gym. The only side effects that I've heard people complain about is upset stomach, gas, and bloating. I've only experienced these when using more than 3.5 grams per day. I once took 8 grams in one day and also got severe migraines so I wouldn't recommend doing that. Oh yeah, there's also one other side effect...perpetual erections. It sounds cool at first until you have to walk around work all day in a thin pair of slacks.
If you just want a supplement for overall circulatory health, then you might want to look into Hawthorne Berries in capsule form. It reduces blood pressure and really enhances your mood. I depend on these everytime I take my final exams.

Answer:
My teacher in my most recent nutrition class said many times that supliments were a big waste of money. I disagree to a point, since most people don't eat a varied, nutrient dense diet... but you should never take a supliment that's more that 100% of the RDA. You would be literally just pissing your money away. Plus, I don't remember exacly what combinations, but large amounts of some vitamins will block the absorbsion of others.
I just get some of the cheap multi's at longs or whatever. The most important thing you can do is eat right. I notice a big boost in energy and brain power when I do... Also regular excercise helps a LOT.

Answer:
I used to take Mega Men, it's a pretty good one, overdosed though in my opinion I took only one tablet a day instead of the reccomended too.
I'm big into working out and take lots of supplements, right now I'm taking AOR's Orthocore. AOR is an awesome company, very research driven, not a big moneygrabber like GNC is. It's expensive though, about $50 for a three month supply, but the quality is unrivaled. A Multivitamin is the foundation of any supplement regime so I'm willing to spend a premium price.
The problem with cheap ones like One-a-day, Centrum, LIFE brand multis is absorption. I read a study from a consumer reports website which did test and found that a large number of the inexpensive multivitamins pass through the body largely unabsorbed. Orthocore comes in the form of powder inside gelcaps so absorption is total. I only take 1/3rd the reccomended daily dose so I can stretch it out and also because in my opinion a lot of the heavy vitamin/mineral doses are unncessary if you eat a reasonably good diet. A multi is just insurance.
One thing to consider though, if you are male, never ever ever buy a multi which has Iron in it. Unless you're a vegetarian you almost certainly get adequate amounts of iron and it will accumulate in your body if taken in extra supplemental form. This can be very hard on your heart. Women are often anemic but males in many, many cases are suffering from minor iron toxicity for long periods of time. Donating blood is another good way to get some of the iron out of your system and bring the levels back down to a healtier level.
Supplementation has been a big interest of mine for several years, I worked at a nutrition store for almost two years so I've accumulated a pretty decent working knowledge of a lot of stuff. If anyone has any questions about stuff I'm happy to help out.
