Internet Service: Dial-Up, Cable, DSL, or Fiber-Optic?
Question:
Well, tomorrow, a Verizon technician will be coming over to my house to install their FiOS fiber-optic Internet service here. By some stroke of good luck, Fort Wayne was the first city in the Midwest to get this service. (On a side note, due to the lengthy installation process for FiOS, I won't be posting between noon and 8 PM on Friday.) This leads me to think: what Internet service do you have in your house/apartment/whatever? Here in "the Fort", we have three broadband Internet options from two companies (Verizon and Comcast). Verizon offers both DSL and fiber service: the DSL service is $20/month for 768K/second download and 384K/second upload or $30/month for 3 MB/second download and 384K/second upload. Verizon's FiOS (fiber optic) service is $40/month for 5 MB/second download and 2 MB/second upload, and $50/month for 15 MB/second download and 2 MB/second upload. On the other hand, Comcast offers a cable modem service that's 8 MB/second download and 1 MB/second upload that's $43/month for subscribers to Comcast cable TV ($58/month if you don't subscribe to Comcast cable TV). Talk about a matrix migraine. Still... I can't wait to get FiOS. I hear that it's great (even Consumer Reports said so). Plus, they threw in a $200 American Express prepaid gift card (good at virtually any store where American Express credit cards are accepted) just to get us to switch from our Verizon DSL... how could we refuse? P.S.: If you still have dial-up, you don't have to feel embarrased to say so. Answer: Dsl Answer: Cable here. It surprises me that there's still people out there with dial-up, given the popularity of web sites like youtube, etc. Answer: SWEEEEEEET! - Rich Answer: University line. I think they have a few T3 connections, but I'm not sure. - Rich Answer: Originally Posted by smndrummer University line. I don't know of anything but T1-T3 that could handle it. - Rich Answer: High speed freakin' cable baby! Answer: I've got DSL - listed at 1500 down and 256 up, I actually get 1200 down 200 up (dslreports.com). As a BellSouth employee, that costs me $16/month. Once AT&T completes, I'm hearing rumors that it may go to free. Comcast offers cablemodem as well. DSL tops out at 6000 down 512 up, Cable I think is 8000 down 1000 up. Not sure of pricing on cable, but I think the top offering is $60. Answer: Went from dial-up to cable a few years ago and what a 'kick' that was .
