Answer:
1. How did you find basenotes?
I felt like doing all those ritual morning things that men do, one of which is apply fragrance. I searched the Web for information about which is stronger, cologne or eau de toilette, I couldn’t remember which one real men used.
2. What are your three favorite scents?
Guerlain’s Vetiver, MPG’s Route du Vetiver, L’Artisan’s Voleur de Roses.
3. What was your very first scent?
Four fight in my memory to claim they were first: Canoe from my mom and dad is probably the winner. Or it was when my mom was given mini bottles of Halston Z-14 and 1-12 after a purchase and gave them to me. That happened about the same time Canoe came along, and that was also about the time my grandfather gave me Signoricci.
4. What is your favorite "guilty pleasure" scent?
Hard to know exactly what “guilty pleasure” means in this context, because I don’t really feel guilty about any of the pleasures scents give me. Guerlain’s Jicky is probably the closest for a couple of reasons: 1, it’s got that naughty and gross civet note, and 2, it’s now marketed to women, so I’m guilty in the sense of crossing the barrier and loving doing so.
5. What are your favorite notes?
Vetiver, lily of the valley, iris, rose, patchouli, lavender, tobacco. In no particular order, but all the others come after vetiver.
6. What is your favorite scent classification?
Might be floral. The classification scheme doesn’t help me much and I don’t keep track of which of my scents are in which classifications.
7. What basenotes forum(s) do you visit the most?
The male fragrance discussion board.
8. What is your favorite basenotes feature?
Favorite feature? That would have to be the feature of the forums itself. The knowledge and thoughts that members offer is the place’s greatest feature. For technological feature, I’d have to say I love the personal message feature.
9. How many times a day/week/month do you check basenotes?
Multiple and extended periods on almost all days.
10. Have you met another basenoter?
You bet I have! Two dinners so far with Jeff (Wicozani). Hi Jeff! Hope all is well.
11. If you could spend the day with another basenoter, who would it be?
Could it be a night? Tigrushka is the fire in my loins.
12. What basenoters share the same tastes as yourself?
You mean vetiver lovers? Roses lovers? Ones who seek out beastly and older scents? Also who don’t favor gourmands too much? I’d guess Knightowl, Pluran, DarkStar, Noirwest, Russlan, Scentemental, Evogel, and I can’t immediately remember other members of the we’re-brilliant club, though they’re out there.
13. What basenoter lives geographically closest to yourself?
I think it’s Azsmells. He’s a suburban boy though. You’ve got to take the subway and then some bus to get out there.
14. What's the best compliment you've ever received and what were you wearing?
“Wow, your coat smells fantastic. What kind of special wood closet do you keep it in?” I was wearing L’Artisan’s Tea for Two, and on my skin, not my coat.
15. What was the worst reaction you've ever received and what were you wearing?
“Chris! Have you been smoking dope!?” I was wearing L’Artisan’s Tea for Two. I hadn’t smoked anything.
16. How many scents do you have in your wardrobe?
Friends and aquainances ask me that question. I reply “a lot.” They follow up: how many is that? “A lot.” They ask “over ten?” I say “a lot.” They ask over one-hundred? I reply “a lot.” When they get sick of this, I tell them that as they ponder the dialog later or talk about it with other friends, that they say to themselves or others, “he evaded the question and just said he had a lot of them.”
I do this because I prefer to keep a mystique, or a mystery, about the collection, rather than give anyone a precise number. Once the precise number is out, be it 36 or in the hundreds, it will still drop jaws and I’ll have to go into the it’s-not-really-so-weird defense. And it kills the drama of not knowing. Consider the options: people asking the question are inspired by not knowing or scoffing because they know. Which would you pick?
17. Do you have a current rotation?
No precise rotation but about half of my days I resolve what fragrance to wear the next day. The other half I sort through the bottles and see what grabs my curiosity at the moment.
18. What are your next fragrance purchases?
Santa Maria Novella’s Melograno; Loewe’s Escensia, Por Hombre, or Solo; Eau Sauvage; Something from D’Orsay; or something from Geo. F. Trumpers.
19. What are some memorable basenotes threads that you enjoyed reading and/or participating in?
Great question. I don’t even know off hand. I really like it when I get a good groove going when I write a review. Sometimes I like writing them so much I’ve got four or five paragraphs down before I know it.
I’ve also enjoyed many of the fighting/battle threads, but only the ones that bring some catharsis to the participants. For example, some of the very old ones in niche versus designer scents. Back when the site’s veterans weighed in on them and every poster seemed to think he or she could re-cast every question on the thread into something that supported his or her own view.
I also found Paul G’s threads memorable. The hate he poured on my favorite, Guerlain’s Vetiver, and the new way he always found to say it was bad. Loved that. I also loved it when Paul G applied Piper Nigrum to the soles of his feet and went to the discos that way--as he danced the perspiration inside his socks and shoes made the scent active and increased his sillage by floating up from his feet. There’s a real man, for sure. Also liked the thread when Paul G told people to watch what they said about Creed or Olivier Creed would personally come and “millesime spray them to the face!”
Those were certainly memorable.
20. Who will be the next one to fill out this survey?
I prefer to leave that to mystery.

Answer:
1. How did you find basenotes?
Googling to investigate the fate of Calvin, the fragrance I wore through grad school. (It turned out to be rather complicated: discontinued, reissued around the millenium -- although there's disagreement as to whether the formula was changed -- and then discontinued a second time.)
2. What are your three favorite scents?
Tough question. Maybe Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune, Dunhill Edition, and Lolita Lempicka au masculin.
3. What was your very first scent?
Brut, but the first I played a part in choosing was Chaps or Grey Flannel.
4. What is your favorite "guilty pleasure" scent?
As long as we're just talking about fragrance products here, I don't really feel guilty about the pleasure any scent gives me.
5. What are your favorite notes?
Bergamot, neroli, grapefruit, cinnamon, anise, sage, cypress, vetiver, rose, jasmine.
6. What is your favorite scent classification?
I used to think it was orientals, but now I don't think I have one.
7. What basenotes forum(s) do you visit the most?
For current threads: New Posts
For browsing the archives: Search All Open Forums
(I don't really like the fact that Basenotes has gender-divided forums, so I try to ignore that structure.)
8. What is your favorite basenotes feature?
Searchable directory, and the seemingly endless stream of interesting new threads in the Forums.
9. How many times a day/week/month do you check basenotes?
Just about every day.
10. Have you met another basenoter?
No. But I'd like to.
11. If you could spend the day with another basenoter, who would it be?
Hard to pick -- I'd probably enjoy chatting/scent-shopping with anyone who's enough of an enthusiast to hang out here.
12. What basenoters share the same tastes as yourself?
Not sure.
13. What basenoter lives geographically closest to yourself?
There are several San Francisco folks, don't know of anyone closer than that.
14. What's the best compliment you've ever received and what were you wearing?
I rarely receive compliments, and when I do they're pretty tame, but a sample of Ava Luxe Cafe Noir got me two on the same day, so I guess I'd have to go with that.
15. What was the worst reaction you've ever received and what were you wearing?
From myself. I had just blind-purchased Givenchy Gentleman and tried wearing what turned out to be an excessive amount to bed one night. Trauma. I doubt I'll ever make my peace with this one.
16. How many scents do you have in your wardrobe?
About two dozen (and a roughly equal number of samples).
17. Do you have a current rotation?
No. Choosing each morning is part of the fun.
18. What are your next fragrance purchases?
Hmm, could be Ava Luxe Cafe Noir (see question 14!) or Diptyque Virgilio (sampled enough to know I love it).
19. What are some memorable basenotes threads that you enjoyed reading and/or participating in?
So many great ones, but I think the greatest of the greats (which I found long after it was active) might be milamber's "A Tribute to the Classics of Scent" /showthread.php?t=168317 .
20. Who will be the next one to fill out this survey?
Don't know, but I bet they smell good!

Answer:
1. How did you find basenotes?
Susskind’s ‘Perfume’, to Wikipedia, to e-Bay, where a decant seller (I got GIT and Acier Aluminium) directs people here for scent reviews.

2. What are your three favourite scents?
Chanel pour Monsieur Concentree, Green Irish Tweed, LV Piper Nigrum
3. What was your very first scent?
I got a bottle of Givenchy Gentleman off my big sister for my 16th birthday.
4. What is your favourite "guilty pleasure" scent?
I do have some samples of Claiborne for Men in my wardrobe (guilty), but I’ve not had the time to decide whether or not I like it (pleasure) yet.
5. What are your favourite notes?
Bergamot, pepper, rose, jasmine, iris, violet, sandalwood, oakmoss.

6. What is your favourite scent classification?
Couldn’t say exactly - though I do have more scents with Gentleman, pour Monsieur and Uomo in the title than ones with Sport, Extreme or Fresh .
7. What basenotes forum(s) do you visit the most?
Men's fragrance discussion, Off-topic (incl men’s grooming). I wish there were more interaction here between men and women. Superstars like moondeva and CologneJunkie, for example, regularly make the leap across the gendered boards - I suppose more of us ought to try the same.
8. What is your favourite basenotes feature?
Community – the first truly civilised online community I’ve had the pleasure of. I love the fact that I can ‘keep my hand in’ by posting on Off-topic whilst I’m building up my wardrobe and scent knowledge.
9. How many times a day/week/month do you check basenotes?
Too much – thrice daily? OK, honestly? More than three times a day.
10. Have you met another basenoter?
No, but there is a possibility (not probability) that I’ll attend the inaugural BN lunch – fingers crossed.
11. If you could spend the day with another basenoter, who would it be?
I can think of a few, but discretion is the better part of valour - so I'll say how; it would involve sunshine, some wine, a picnic under some trees and lively conversation.
12. What basenoters share the same tastes as yourself?
Probably the Australians (must be the warm and affectionate bond between our nations) Eluard and Ged. Joe Frances of NYC seems to share some tastes and interests. The reviews that match my own feelings about particular scents often come from pluran.
13. What basenoter lives geographically closest to yourself?
I reckon it’s Latch35. Yes we all have numbers in Lancashire – as the birthplace of the industrial revolution, the satanic mill-owners have had longer to grind us down.
14. What's the best compliment you've ever received and what were you wearing?
A bit oblique – there is a rather snooty history lecturer who shares our building (double-barrel surname, Queen’s English pronunciation etc.). I was wearing Tea for Two and as we passed in the corridor, she turned and smiled. We crossed again shortly after and she positively leaned in and took a great big sniff. I think I unsettled her fixed opinion of me.
15. What was the worst reaction you've ever received and what were you wearing?
Some poor soul had the seat next to me in the theatre after a few hours of sampling ‘winter frags’. He did not return after the interval.
16. How many scents do you have in your wardrobe?
About 20 bottles, 40 decants, 15 samples.
17. Do you have a current rotation?
Not at all. Too early for me – I’m still getting a feel for the whole area.
18. What are your next fragrance purchases?
Just got some Acqua di Genova for me and Fracas for DW, so I’m keeping my wallet in my back pocket for a few weeks.

19. What are some memorable basenotes threads that you enjoyed reading and/or participating in?
LPOTD, Member Pictures.
