Windows Vista
Question:
Has anyone gotten it or going to get it?
There's no doubt it looks good, but I'm a tad sceptical. Given it's resource intensiveness, it sounds like I need a really high end gaming computer to run it and maintain the speed and functionality of the regular programs I like running at the moment. Else it could be like I moved my programs back to a Pentium 111 computer.
In your experience, is my scepticism misplaced?

Answer:
I tried Windows Vista (both Home Basic and Home Premium) on several display computers at many a store.
Home Basic is basically warmed-over Windows XP, while Home Premium has a nice interface and some cool features. But those cool features were on the Mac first, and the interface is a ripoff of Mac OS X. Plus, despite what Microsoft would want you to believe, Vista isn't any better at fighting viruses or spyware than XP is.
Of course, why not just skip Vista altogether and get a Mac? That's what I did. Plus, with a Mac, you don't have to worry about the viruses and spyware. And if you like games, why not just buy an Xbox 360, Wii, or PlayStation 3 instead of futzing around with a computer?
(Disclaimer: I do not work for Apple... these statements are strictly my personal opinion.)

Answer:
I'm not planning on getting Vista anytime soon, i think it's a waste of money. I'll stick with XP Pro and Linux for now. But i know that at some point i will be forced into buying Vista, I need to be able to use Office and a bunch of the other Microsoft applications.
I really do think Vista is a big rip-off, it's still going to be a crappy OS it's just going to look "pretty". They should take a hint from the mac guys, base your OS of a good starting point. Apple used Unix as a starting point, the OS that runs 80% of the internet.

Answer:
I'd give them a year or so to get the inevitable bugs, and subsequent releases/service packs out. Unless you are itching to be the first kid on the block with the new toy...

I think I detect a certain negativity among the responses. I got Windows XP just as it was coming out on my first computer, and remember all the hassle I had getting programs and hardware to work with it, andI must confess I don't want to go through all that again.
I've got heaps of cool things to put on Windows XP to make it work better and look better, but I've kept very few of them, because Windows XP is basically pretty good and friendly. The only utility I ever found indispensible was WinPatrol - to get rid of start up programs I didn't want. The only thing I ever implemented was sticking the Page File onto a second hard drive so as to speed up XPs operation.
A local computer magazine I got today advises to wait for Service Pack 1 before getting Vista.

There's always something vital I can't get to work on whichever computer I've tried - usually sound, CD/DVD writers and the internet (modem and cable). I've tried finding ways of fixing them, but wind up with lots of programs (front ends, back ends etc) without any explanation of exactly how to install them with whichever Linux version I was using.

Answer:
XP has worked like a charm for me.
I'll just wait until Vista's bugs are ironed out and the price comes down.

Answer:
Drzed is right on the money: wait for a few revisions. Microsoft's first release is *always* full of bugs.
Macs can be expensive, but since they started using Intel, the entry point is really quite comparable to an x86 setup:
the Mac mini starts at $600, the iMac at $1000
I'm going to hang on with XPSP2 for as long as I can. I'm quite seriously contemplating OS X and/or Solaris 10 x86 as my next OS for my primary home system.
Hope this helps

Hope this helps Just curious. I loaded Solaris 10 into my PC once, as it came for free on my computer magazine's DVD. It worked, but I wasn't really sure what to do with it - is there any software available for it?

Renato They've had to take their Macs in for service? What were they doing to them?!?!? Just kidding.
I love my Mac, it has Mac OS X and Windows XP. I spend 97% of my time on the Mac side. I have Counterstrike on the Windows side, Counterstrike Source, Half Life 2, and Dark Messiah Might and Magic. I'm not going to lie, it took a fair bit of fiddling to get XP to run, then even more to get the graphics card to work properly, but my Macbook Pro is faster than my cousins XP dedicated desktop. It's a lot of fun, and I would definitely recommend a Mac before I would recommend an XP or a Vista system. (After all, you can install both of those on Macs.) The iMac is a very affordable option in my opinion.
