Welcome to Live Dialogue !!!

Any "What Not to Wear" fans on this site?
Question:
I have taken to watching "What Not to Wear" on TLC...it's amazing how a makeover and decent clothes affect peoples' self-esteem, confidence, and overall personalities. Plus, I've learned quite a bit about style from this show. Anyone else here watch this show?

Answer:
I actually think I've seen that show before. It sounds so farmilliar to me.
I would have to add UGG boots to that list. I think they are the most rediculous shoes/boots in the world and I wouldn't mind watching the entired world stock of UGGS burn in a huge bon fire. I think they make womens beautiful feet look like those of a platapus and it is gross!! Make them go away!! They are such a fad yet everyone claims they are comfortable and they don't wear them "just because", which may be the case for some people but I know that no girl likes how they look and they are not functional boots!! They are rediculous! Major thumbs down on those things and if I was on that show I would rant about how much I dispise those things... > ERRGGGG

But I think you're right about the makeover affecting someone's confidence. A good example is the show MADE on MTV.

Then they have the "furry" boots now too, which I don't like too much either. I've even seen Ugg boots for men, but, luckily, I have yet to see them actually on a man.
Also, I'm not a big fan of those "pregnancy dresses." Not sure what they are called, but they are like half tank top/halter top, half skirt. It makes the article of clothing look like a dress, but girls wear it with jeans. I'm not sure of their proper name, but I don't like them that much either. It destroys the female form.

I've seen them on men. I saw them on a skateboarding man and wondered where the hell I was. It was like a horrible dream. I also have seen those furry ones and they look even worse. Like nasty, big, ugly himalayan "thing" feet. They look like a hunter from Antartica would wear them. So, unnesessary and they need to go.
As for your maturnaty shirts (that is what they are called here), they are nice on some girls. They were made to be flowey and long to cover a huge stomach but now girls who aren't pregnant look it because of these shirts. It takes away from the curves and deaccents the tummy region, which is a silly thing to do. I like them sometimes but mostly they just have to get the heck out of town with those UGG boots because they are both a little rediculous...

I watch "What not to Wear" with the original British women -- they are too funny! I've watched the American version but it just doesn't work with out that stern British accent.
The main thing I've changed from watching the show is I NEVER go out without a bra anymore, and underwire at that. ;D ;D ;D

Answer:
I enjoy watching that show whenever I get a chance. I'm not able to learn as much since they mainly makeover women on the show, but they did have two or three guys in the last week or so. I'm always envious of the $5,000 they get, but of course my style is not bad enough to ever be that lucky.

oh wow, never expected a "skater" to be seen wearing Ugg boots. That must have been quite a sight!
I guess some girls would look good in those shirt/skirts, but I also think it's silly for a thin girl to hide the appearance of her body.
I wonder what the next trend for this spring/summer 2006 will be. Hope it's something good!

Answer:
Trinny and Susannah are pretty frightening, I think. While I do have a lot of sympathy for their approach (lots of 'non Basenoters' need that stern attitude, I'm sure) what is disappointing is that they really do not allow anyone's personality to come through in their 'new style'. It is very much their style and not the client's IMO.

But, I still have learned some things about colors and patterns.
I just love the way that being put in front of 360-degree mirrors and forced to face the way they actually look to others changes people's perceptions of themselves and their wardrobes. Everyone comes in with an attitude of "this is how I look because it makes me who I am" and the myth that "it shouldn't matter what others think of me." Then they find out the "who they are" transcends what they wear, and that they can be "who they are" while also looking good to others, which actually does matter because others' impressions of them actually do affect their lives in a myriad of ways. I think it confronts some heavy philosophical issues regarding the presuppositions and assumptions that people have about the relationship between style and personality.
