Kodak launches printer ink price war...
Question:
A few days ago, Kodak introduced three new multifunction inkjet printers. Sure, the usual marketing drivel is there like "Kodak-quality, instantly-dry prints" and "prints that last a lifetime" thanks to "new proprietary Kodak pigment-based inks". But what caught my eye is that Kodak claims that you can "save up to 50% on everything you print". Kodak's "Kodacolor Technology" claims to use a permanent printhead that allows Kodak to deliver the ink cost savings. They also claim that you can print photos at home using Kodak's Ultra Premium Photo Paper for 14 cents per 4x6 print (as opposed to 31 cents for competing printers), which is competitive with Snapfish and other online services (and cheaper than Kodak's own EasyShare Gallery!). Even plain-paper text is supposedly cheaper: Kodak claims 3 cents/page (competitive with laser) as opposed to the competition's 7 cents/page. Will it be any good? The new printers will be launching in the US in March at Best Buy (who has an exclusive on the product for three months). Still, don't expect HP, Canon, Epson, and Lexmark to sit around and keep their ink prices super-high. Answer: Interesting about Kodak. After I wrecked my ladyfriend's Epson printer by using non genuine ink, I went and bought her a new one a few months ago. I bought her a new Epson, and much to my surprise the new cartridges were considerably cheaper than the old ones (A$13 to 14 new vs A$23 to 24 old). What's more, a local computer magazine tested them and said they were very good value for the output. It'll be interesting to see what HP does.
