Our curiosity is up.
And how could I forget Gary Moore (rock, but better at blues)

Answer:
oh, it makes me so happy happy happy to see mention of beefheart and hawkwind!
let's not forget the Stooges, who made the greatest rock album of ALL time (funhouse). Gong, who really, really, steal the stone cold tripper credentials right out from under pink floyd. David Bowie, the most chameleonic performer extant, and fecund as all hell. Tim Buckley, whose later stuff I will never ever tire of (i can listen to dream letter live over and over and over again). not sure it's rock and roll, but it sho does rock: last exit, featuring one of the worlds greatest bass players, and quite awesome drummer/sax/guitar players too (RIP Sonny Sharrock). Can, the band that put the kraut in krautrock. Deerhoof is the best local SF band i've ever seen. the pixies, without whom there would have been no Nirvana (without whom "grunge" would still refer to the stuff that sticks to the inside of your bong). and i'll just end with Queen, because, well, freddie mercury is gawd (no slight to clapton intended). so sad that i'm forgetting so many../..
oh btw - i love the beatles, especially the post-65 output. and i dig some pink floyd, especially the wall (formative years associations). but y'know what? there is no best. in fact, no offense, but "best" lists in music are stoopid (though i stand by my assessment of funhouse as best rock record ever, because it is just so singular). it is not a competition. ther are no standard criteria you can evaluate by. eg, beatles vs PF: well, beatles handilly wins on the songwritng vector, but PF gets it on the production vector. throw artistic vision into the mix, and you have a hard time unseating pet sounds (yes, the beach boys). really, all we can have are favorites (except on american idol). and the artists mentioned above are just a small handfull of some of my faves.
peace out. (i mean that as an imperative)

Answer:
1 - Led Zeppelin
2 - Kiss
3 - Black Sabbath/Ozzy (solo)
4 - Guns N Roses
5 - AC/DC
6 - Scorpions
7 - Pink Floyd
Honorable mention:
- Tesla
- Whitesnake
- Kingdom Come
- Motley Crue
- Metallica
The Beatles bore me to death. I've always been into heavy metal and hard rock. I like a lot of the >90s rock & metal bands but my school years were the 70s and 80s and that era of music is burned into my brain - in a good way
Saw Pink Floyd at a sold-out Dolphin Stadium (then called Joe Robbie stadium) in Miami during their last US tour many moons ago. Just before going into the stadium, I drank a half-pint of my specially brewed shroom tea and gave the other half to a complete stranger. The temperature out was just cool enough that the rain to come later would make you pretty miserable if you didn't have something to keep you dry. I had brought a black trashbag to use as a raincoat just in case. Just as the concert began, it started to drizzle. White clouds hung low. I was quite toasty in more ways than one. The laser show, in the rain, hitting the clouds, me tripping, engulfed in the sounds of Pink Floyd, was one of the most amazing experiences i've ever had.
Afterwards, the stranger thanked me profusely for my generous enhancement to his evening.

Answer:
1) the Beatles- No contest here in my opinion. They have no equal.
2) We don't have the benefit of looking back at the career of my #2 because they are still going, U2.

I wish I'd been drunk because, apart from a few songs, it was pretty tedious when watched sober.
Apart from "Learning to Fly", "Wish you were here" and a few songs from Dark Side of the Moon, their stuff never really grabbed me. It was my misfortune to have numerous buddies who loved them and played them unceasingly.
Furthermore, people nowadays keep referring to the Moon's Farside (meaning the part we can't see) as it's Darkside, probably thanks to Pink Floyd.

Answer:
Beatles are the number 1, no doubt about it!
I second Renato's thoughts about pink Floyd...
The ones I like a lot:
Radiohead - The Smiths - Morrissey - Morcheeba - Travis - Cold Play - Belle and Sebastian

Answer:
TDDanae- Since you asked... John Bonham, as he had apparently done on at least several other occasions, puked all over his drum set during one of the groups' last songs. They finished the set without him. Some very interesting versions of their songs came out. The group, at the time, were heavy drinkers and refused anything to smoke despite their(at least Page's) reputation for the hard stuff. I fixed Jimmy Page up with a girl from Long Island who had wanted to meet him. I have the picture in a magazine.

Answer:
ok since I was young and interested in music while these bands played and released albums.
1. The Rolling Stones
2. Pink Floyd
3. Moby Grape
4. The Clash
5. Big Audio Dynamite
6. The Beatles sans Yoko
I could go on and on
I listen to classical now. It's all about the blood pressure at my age.

Amazing considering all the drugs out now. So easy to screw up your head without the hang-overs.

Answer:
1. The Rolling Stones
2. Then - a list of all great rock bands in no particular order.
That's the only objective picture of rock'n'roll in retrospective. Everything else is personal speculations.
