Question:
Violent Femme's cover of Culture Club's "Do you really want to hurt me" put enough of their stamp on the original song, that it came off as a seamless cover.. likely, my favorite. a. Answer: Indiscreet...... I don't know if they were FIRST, but Beatles protege's Badfinger recorded "Without You" before Harry Nilsson released it. I don't remember which Badfinger album it was on (and I'm too darn lazy to look it up!), but, yes, I beleive they released it before Nilsson had a hit with it. The English Beat's cover of Smokey Robinson's "Tears of a Clown" is posalutely cool as can be. IMHO. The groove is smokin'. Yikes. Santana's version of "Well Alright" (orig. Buddy Holly) is fantastic. And yes, Blind Faith did cover it as well, some ten or so years before the Santana version ("Inner Secrets" Santana album, I believe......), but the Santana version is the one I identfy with, seeing as my oldest brother loves Carlos' guitar playing to bits!! LOL Van Halen's cover of the Kinks' classic "You Really Got Me" is a cool one, too. It is reported that Ray Davies finds it his favorite of all the remade versions of this song Have any of you ever heard Jeff Berlin cover Cream's cover (?!?!?!) of "Crossroads?" If not and you are a music fan, you should hear this. Berlin plays Claptons guitar solos (BOTH!!) note-for-note (an octave lower of course) on the bass and it's absolutely mind-blowing!! And some hometown (neighboring town, really) kudos go out to Cheap Trick. These guys have definitely done some covers in their time, but Live at Budokhan's version of the Fats Domino classic "Ain't that a Shame" (complete with the FOUR members trading off solo digs at the end of the number!!!!) always brings a huge grin to my face!! And Bun E. Carlos' slam-bastic drum intro is sweet, too!! Is the drummer Rich (R$) reading this.......? I don't remember which Badfinger album it was on (and I'm too darn lazy to look it up!), but, yes, I beleive they released it before Nilsson had a hit with it. I don't think there ever was a second Badfinger album because the Beatles were having trouble keeping Apple Records going and arguing with their greedy manager and Yoko and a lot of other shite that led to the breakup. George and Paul did release their solo work on Apple for a while I think The English Beat's cover of Smokey Robinson's "Tears of a Clown" is posalutely cool as can be. IMHO. The groove is smokin'. Yikes. the smoky version had James Jamerson on it and although they mixed the bass to far down, if you emphasize it and hear the arpeggios he plays all over around and through everone else you will truly be amazed and addicted since you listen to Jeff Berlin I figure you have more than a passing interest in Bass. LOL Carlo's rarely disappoints. Van Halen's cover of the Kinks' classic "You Really Got Me" is a cool one, too. It is reported that Ray Davies finds it his favorite of all the remade versions of this song nor does Eddie Have any of you ever heard Jeff Berlin cover Cream's cover (?!?!?!) of "Crossroads?" If not and you are a music fan, you should hear this. Berlin plays Claptons guitar solos (BOTH!!) note-for-note (an octave lower of course) on the bass and it's absolutely mind-blowing!! I'll look for it. Jack Bruce wasn't to bad either. He and Ginger had jazz roots. I remember a few of Cheap Tricks songs but not any covers. Answer: I think Van Halen's version of "You Really Got Me" is much better than The Kink's original version. Answer: No offense, but I totally HATE Van Halen's version of the Kinks' classic. David Lee Roth is an absolute spazz and Eddie's wank-fest gets a big thumbs down from me. On the other hand, All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix is an amazing cover of the Dylan original. (Mr. Zimmerman even conceded the song to Jimi, saying that it was "his song.") Nirvana's version of The Man Who Sold the World by David Bowie is pretty darn good too. Likewise with Candy-O by the Melvins!! Answer: One of my favourite cover versions is the Toots and the Maytals version of John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads".
