Help me with my bad hair
Question:
Hi everyone,
I am badly in need of some advice:
I usually have shaved hair which I don’t think suits me but I tend to shave it anyway because medium/short hair looks even worse on me. At the moment my hair is about an inch or and inch and a half long and looks pretty rank. I am thinking of growing it longer and hoping for the best. Since my last haircut was a #2 the back and sides are looking pretty messy.
What do you guys think I should do:
1) Go to expensive hair stylist and get whatever they recommend or would it be a waste of money? My hair thick and generally behaves like its made of wire or something. It naturally points/waves in the worst directions. I would be highly surprised even if a professional could do something decent with it lol
2) Go to a cheap hair dresser and get them to tidy up the back and sides a little so I can continue to grow it longer whilst not looking 'quite' as bad. Then I could go to a more expensive hair stylist when I have more hair for them to do something with
3) Do nothing and leave it to look rank while it grows
4) Other?
I have never been to a pricey hair dresser before, do you guys reckon it’s worth it?
I might even try to get a photo up of the pain I have to deal with if it will help.
Thanks in advance...

Yeah, a photo would help
I'd go with #1. Last time, I moved to a new area, it took me several haircuts to find a good stylist. I'm not some drama queen and don't have weird hair. Pick out some women with nice hair and ask them where they go and who they see then call for the price of a male haircut. The cheapest person at a salon is the newest person usually, but a super high priced one just isn't worth it for me. They should ask you about your hair, hair products, etc. and be able to help you manage your hair. Hair products - small bottles at first. Stuff like gel, etc. hold off for a day. They'll put some in your hair at the end (assuming you want extra control). Some stuff might not work or you might not like right away. Come back later and talk to them then purchase what you need.
A cheap stylist makes hair shorter, a good stylist makes hair look good.

I agree that a photo would make this an easier thing to judge...
I would probably just get cheep hair cuts until it grows out. Hair grows faster if you continually trim it and that way you can make it look better. I wouldn't waste money on something really fancy. It sounds like you have curyly or wavy hair. I have the worst curyly fro when I let it grow so I keep it short. Anything in between sucks. I just make sure I always brush the sides back and keep the top tidy. If you look clean then no one really notices.
I hate long hair and it is so much more annoying and just more work in general. I like mine short because I have the exact same problem as you. I would keep it short just because I like mine that way and it just makes life easier. It is up to you though...

That being said, I think you should try a more expensive stylist. While "expensive" does not necessarily always mean "quality," it's usually a safer bet than going with a cheap stylist because, hey, there's a reason why some stylists command such high prices. For guys an "expensive" haircut is usually not too too much. I agree with Propaganda13 about asking people with good haircuts where they go. You can ask the stylist for his/her honest opinion about what would be best for your hair considering its texture and your lifestyle (whether you don't mind spending time styling it or if you are a wash n' go type o' guy).
A good stylist will do what's best for you. I had a stylist for years who basically told me he could never really cut my hair short because he just didn't think it would be a good look for me. Of course, he would do it if I really wanted it, but I just kept it long. Well, I decided to "cheat" on him and try someone else and I got my hair cut really, really short. And guess what? It did not suit me at all. The guy who cut it probably should have been a little more honest with me, but I think he just didn't care. He was just doing his job, and, trust me, when it comes to your hair, you want much more than someone who just does their job.
By the way, I am back with that stylist now (I recently moved back to the city where I went to undergrad) and my hair is long and I am happy!
Hope you find a stylist that makes you happy too.

What does make hair grow faster? I just got a haircut last week and it seems to be growing faster then usual. :-?

Answer:
It all depends on you. Some people's hair grows fast, some people's does not. Also, your hair grows at different rates on different parts of your scalp.
Is your hair short? With short hair, ANY amount of growth is always more noticeable than it would be on long hair.
Some people say that hair grows faster in warmer weather--I don't think this has been proven or disproven.

Exactly!
If your hair is one inch long, and it grows 1/16 of an inch in a week, then your hair just increased in length about 6%. If your hair is 5 inches long and it grows that same 1/16th of an inch in a week, then it only increased in length about 1%. The hair is growing at the same speed, it's simply more noticeable when it's short.
I have had really short hair for several years now, but before then I had long hair. It was nice because I could go months between haircuts. Nowadays I need a cut every 2 weeks or so if I want it to look nice.

Steve, you need to get yourself to a good stylist right away. Always remember that you wear your haircut everyday, and a good cut (if done by a talented stylist who understands and works with your hair) is an important investment.
If you know a place to go, call them and ask for a consultation with the stylist you choose (which is usually free). They can take a couple of minutes to check out your hair and then you can easily explain your concerns and what you want to do. Also ask the stylist's opinion - both what he/she thinks you should do for now while your hair is growing out, and then what your ultimate goal should be. Ask them why too - they may have length or shape suggestions based on a facial feature of yours, or your hair texture, or even your lifestyle or profession, so you'll get a good idea of where there're coming from and whether you agree with them or not. Some places will even take a walk-in for a consultation, especially on a weekday), but it's usually better to call ahead.
If you end up liking the cut and stylist, you can always stay with him or her, but if you finally find a type of cut you like you can always take a picture of it and then go to a less expensive stylist to try and recreate it. It doesn't always work, but might be worth a shot if money's tight.
