This thread is NOT for Creed-haters! - Page 2
Question:
I got into fragrances via Creed (like quite a few others here on Basenotes I believe) and then mostly stayed in the "niche" fragrance arena, trying out lots of decants and samples from the likes of MPG, Bond, Montale, Serge Lutens, L'Artisan, etc...all the much talked about niche houses really. Its only recently (well an year ago) that I have dabbled in offerings from Chanel, Guerlain and Hermes (the classic houses). But Creed was my first and set the bar quite high. Its my favorite house - I find a very happy balance here. Most Serge Lutens/L'Artisans/MPGs are "atmospheric" scents - i.e., smells which I dont necessarily want in contact with my body, but they do well as home sprays. Creed makes fragrances which I want to smell on my body, close to my body. With that said, heres a (fast run down) of my impressions: Angelique Encens - good stuff, but maybe I am not getting the magic here. Can be too powdery at times. Women at other blogs rave about this one. I dont (but i am not a woman, so maybe women like it more than men?). Vintage Tabarome - Superb tobacco scent. Classic, distinguished, and strangely fresh and deep at the same time. I prefer it to the harsher Tabarome millesime. Millesime Imperial - The gold standard (pun intended) for fresh-fruity-aquatic scents. Has that very addictive salty-melony accord which I so crave. Green Irish Tweed - another staple, another classic. Imitated many times, never bettered. My earthy violet fix. Santal Imperial - I had a bad decant of this one. Hated it. Got a fresh decant. Its astoundingly good. Probably the finest sandalwood scent, it displays a fantastic sandalwood note with a minimalist supporting cast. After testing almost all the big name sandalwood scents, this is the one I reach for most of the times. Acier Aluminium - superb "fruity" amber spicy scent, which has a haunting metallic note which peeks out occasionally. A star in the Creed line up, this is the lutens spicy-sweet-fruity thingy done the way I want. Bois De Cedrat - excellent citrus notes, an old old classic. Stands out less now because the basic formula has been imitated often. Still, must have made an important contribution way back in the day. Orange Spice - a strange mix of cloves, spices and oranges. I like it. Kouros used this as a template for top notes and did more. Selection Verte - a startling mint note, cool crisp citrus, and a vegetal pea note. Amazingly refreshing, and I would love a flacon. Royal Scottish Lavender - the gold standard lavender. Like Santal Imperial, you get a high quality lavender note with a small supporting cast of notes. I am yet to smell a better lavender scent. Cuir De Russie - hot dirty slightly salty and very realistic leather, which despite the description is strangely very wearable. Addictive and leather fans should try it. Royal English Leather - superb, simple, yet highly effective mandarin and leather composition. A must try for leather fans, I see strains of this in another classic, Chanel Cuir De Russie. Royal Delight - an intriguing composition (that "scotch tape" accord), but a little too sweet for me. I like the leather in the base. Cypres Musc/Epicea - just recently compared these. Prefer Cypres Musc - smells more natural than epicea. Need more time for deeper comparisons. Citrus Bigarade - excellent citrus. Love the very natural sharp top notes and the more muted base. Inspiration for Malle's Cologne Bigarade. Neroli Sauvage - superb neroli interpretation. A favorite of many. Very few neroli's are better. Erolfa - I am not into pure aquatics anymore, but this is the best I have tried. Salty aquatic note made wearable via liberal use of citrus. Good stuff. Original Santal - less impressive than Santal Imperial, I do get the sandalwood in here, but its now clouded by orange blossom and coriander ("a modern intepretation"). I wear it a lot, but I prefer Santal Imperial. Himalaya - this one gets me lots of compliments. Wont win any awards for groundbreaking perfume design, but it works extremely well and it does smell like "fresh mountain air" (when not used heavily). Well that should do it for now - so yea, there are definitely quite a few classics in there, and lots of variety. Answer: Nice characterizations. I must say that this is a House the self-presentation of which borders on the farcical IMHO - but that's not untypical of certain family businesses. They do overstate their importance to perfume history in an amost campy fashion. But all this is forgotten in view of their fabulous creations, the classics, as well as a number of Olivier's which are up there with the very finest in perfumery. Of those I own, 5 stars go to REL - an incomparable, luxurious, oriental leather. nothing dirty here, just magnificent opulence Baie de Genievre - Juniper and cinnamon leaves. Such a timeless beauty, I have yet to find a more wearable rendition of juniper, capturing its fresh power while avoiding cloying, throatscratching or sourness. BdP - clear sharp smoky woods under a sharp lavender top, smoking embers in a crystal clear autumn landscape Bois de Santal (decant): straightforward powerful sandalwood. Brash, energetic, foody, quite a contrast to the quietly pleasant Santal Imperial 4 stars: Royal Delight, Tabarome Millesime, Santal Imperial (it's grown on me), Néroli Sauvage. Epicea (decant) 3 stars: Angelique Encens:still working on this Ambre Cannelle: pretty good, but too thick for me The only two I have not liked are Royal Water, which I sold off, and MI, which I just don't get. And I'm looking forward to Acier Aluminium, which is one the way. Is this a great house? It sure is. I just wish they would let their fragrances do the talking. Answer: Great post...great perfume house. I've sampled many and bought: Acier Aluminum Silver Mountain Water Millesime Imperial Erolfa Himalaya Bois de Cedrat Neroli Sauvage Baie di Genievre Green Irish Tweed For me the thing that makes this house great is that they have produced SO MANY quality fragrances. While I enjoy many scents from many houses, I don't think anyone else comes close with regard to the number of winners, many of them that have withstood the test of time. Have a great evening all... Answer: Creed essentially sent me down the road of loving and enjoying fragrances as a hobby. Previously, I had been wearing that Axe crap, then moved on to my first "fine" fragrance (I use the term fairly loosely), Ferrari #1. After that was depleted, I began searching the internet for something new and special. I came across Basenotes, where glowing reviews for Creed abound. I wanted something "different," and it seemed like Acier Aluminum was just what I was looking for. I ordered a decant off of eBay and immediately fell in love. A few days later, a whole bottle was mine, and I've never looked back since. Many fragrances have entered my collection, but the Acier Aluminum has still yet to be dethroned. After an unfortunate accident with the sprayer malfunctioning and leaking a significant quantity of juice, the AA has been relegated to extreme special situations only, but a replacement will be on its way once the funds are more readily available. Besideds my beloved Acier Aluminum, I also own a full bottle of Millesime Imperial, which I also am extremely fond of. I also own decants of Santal Imperial, GIT, BdP, REL, and Himalaya- and will probably end up purchasing full bottles when I'm able to. Many pan Creed for being expensive, but when you take the time to become familiar with the nuances and complexity of the fragrances, it becomes easy to appreciate why. Like other high-end/niche houses, they're pretty much in a league of their own. P.S. - pluran: I want to live in those woods featured in your avatar pic! Answer: I own; GIT (of course) MI Tabarome Erolfa (hands down the best aquatic I've sampled) Acier Aluminum (still haven't got my head around this one) Neroli Savage (as said above, few Nerolis are better (IMHO, none are better)) I still want BdP, Orange Spice and possibly Green Valley Answer: I own: 1. GIT 2.Tabarome 3.Himalaya My want list is 1.BdP-This one has gotten me compliments too . 2.Green Valley. 3.Original Santal 4. RSL. 5.Creed Vetiver. Once I have these, I'll die a happy man. Answer: I sometimes think that if it ever came down to it, I could easily make-do with only Creed fragrances in my repertoire... I currently Own: 1. Erolfa: My first full-bottle Creed purchase. Goes perfectly with the weather here in Miami. I always have a bottle on hand and can't imagine not having one. 2. GIT: Elegant. Cary Grant, indeed. Smells like black-and-white movie, in a good way. 3. Himalaya: A masterpiece. Probably my favorite. Always puts a spark in my step. 4. Baie de Genievre: Mysterious. Wish I could wear it more, climatologically speaking... best in cool weather, I'd say. Great for gin lovers. I've tried most of them and have also owned bottles of Silver Mountain Water, MI and Cypres-Musc. SMW is great. My opinion of MI is ambiguous... it seems very good at times, and not so great at others. Cypres-Musc I didn't care for at all. The lady of the house owns Jasmal and Fleur de Bulgarie (a gift from me)... both are awsome. We Visited the Creed house boutique in Paris in 2004 and saw Olivier in the flesh on the street, walking. He looked exactly like he does on the little insert card... grey suit, same facial expression and everything. A cool fragrance house in my book. While I really like GIT, I think that Kiton is the masterpiece of style and classiness, and is totally unlike GIT - as it is a mossy scent. Thus, no growing up is required. The scents most often touted as light versions of GIT are Cool Water and Curve. Renato Answer: I love Creed too, my faves are: 1. MI (I own 9 full bottles, and one bottle which is half full) 2. Erolfa (I own 6 full bottles, which I am actually wearing right now as I type this) 3. GIT (I own 4 full bottles) 4. Virgin Island Water (I only have 1 full bottle) In the near future I plan on getting Himalaya. Answer: Why so little love for Original Vetiver? I love this scent so much it feels like a member of the family. I would certainly mourn if it were to pass away. I think I'm going to stock pile it just in case they discontinue it. I've sampled some other Creeds, but at this point the only bottle I own other than Original Vetiver is GIT. My problem is that I like Original Vetiver so much that I lose my motivation to try anything else. This thread is inspiring me though. Creed sure has great marketing. Whether you love it or hate it, everyone has an opinion on Creed. Copyright ? 2006 - 2007 www.thankhealth.com Privacy Policy
