Ode to Cologne - Page 2
Question:
Not that any of them are actually Colognes, though...

Answer:
Farina Gegenüber dem Jülichsplatz EdC - the real McCoy. Since 1709. Bit more high pitched than Imperial, longer lasting on me though. Very hesperidic-herbal.
Guerlain, Impérial, Coq, Eau de Fleurs des Cedrat, Eau de Guerlain. These are all great. Prefer Imperial and Coq.
Roger & Gallet - Jean Marie Farina Extra Vieille. neroli heaven
Berdoues, No. 444 Extra Vieille, even more neroli. Stunning.
Roget & Gallet Bouquet Imperial. More 1891 than 1991. Fruity-musky.
R&G Cologne, recent one by Dominique Ropion; very refreshing zesty orangey.
Hermes Eau d'Orange Verte - best fresh green orange around.
Adolfo Dominguez Azahar - mixes neroli, orange and white florals. Nice
MPG pour le jeune homme. A picture perfect traditional cologne, good lasting power.
Asprey Purple Water. Classy. Fresh. Intriguing floral notes. Love it.
EdC Ambrée Jussy St. James. Light, wonderful amber, I bathe in this after work.
Acqua di Parma Colonia. Citrus and rose, very fine.
d'Orsay Etiquette Bleue. EdT, but very much in the style of a classic EdC. Short lasting for an EdT, fine for an EdC, magic neroli, soft musk base. Perfect.
Honorary mention:
Monsieur Balmain EdT. My favorite zingy-sour-fresh lemon scent
Nicolai Cologne Sologne - supposedly one of the best. In the mail
Villoresis's is supposedly great too and I'll believe that blind.
And I would love to try 1916 by Myrurgia as well.
NOT:
4711 - cheap, synthetic, short.
Concentrée d'Orange Verte. Too musty. The sickly child of Eau d'Orange Verte and Eau d'Hermes, both of which are perfect. Unnecessary.
I love Eau de Cologne

I love Cologne And it's only the beginning. All those Italian waters: Genova, Biella, Borsari...There's also some nice Creeds (Neroli Sauvage, Zeste Mandarine Pampelmousse). I'm sure hirch-duckfinder and narcus, two big cologne fans, can add many more suggestions.

Answer:
I'd love to hear Hirch and Narcus expound on cologne here. ZZ on the Creed offerings. I know I'm not worthy (being I have Clash links in my sig.) but all the same.
Was the mention of a book in the writing stages directed at yourself Mr. Life?

I love Eau de Cologne Do you buy Farina Gegenüber dem Jülichsplatz EdC from an actual store or an online retailer?
I'm in the States but can never seem to find this stuff. I love lighter scents and EdCs myself, and have been dying to try this one for some time now.
No doubt about it - EdCs are my new scent obsession. I think I've started to realize lasting power isn't always what I want, particularly in warmer weather.
Oh yeah, one other thing as long as we're discussing proper colognes...
I think I got all excited over 4711 for nothing. (The big 800ml glass bottle is nice though.) The drydown isn't clean on my skin - I get an odd mustiness that hangs around, albeit very close to the skin.
Is this just because it isn't that warm yet, or does that happen to anyone else?

Answer:
Farina went through some turbulent times. At one point they merged with Roger&Gallet, but when they were swallowed by Gucci the family bought back the interest in the company. I don't think you can get it anywhere but in Cologne and I doubt whether their production is very significant. www.manufactum.de alone offers it in their catalogue, but only within Germany. My perfume store in Frankfurt is trying to strike up a deal with them, but it's difficult. Evidently they are not interested in selling too much.
It's not that far to Cologne from where I live, but I actually got mine luckily on ebay Germany.Check out http://www.farina1709.com for kicks, the interesting but extremely amateurish company website.
It is very good, but not superior to, say Imperiale by Guerlain. Well, we're talking major league here, of course. And it is different from all the others, so worth trying for sure.
