Ode to Cologne
Question:
Such wonderful posts have been written in Basenotes about specific notes and the confections which capture them. In my time on Basenotes I've yet to see a thread comparing and extolling the many wonderful Eaux de Cologne which are out there. It took me ages to discover Aqua Di Biella Number 1 which I really love and wish lasted longer. Most recently I have discovered Piazzetta Di Portofino which I really like also. I'd love to see other Basenoters' favourites and hopefully, in the reading of the posts find a few new treasures. Answer: Some of my favorites: L'Eau de l'Artisan: very long lasting, nice green notes; Eau de Guerlain: elegant, also rich in green notes; Eau de Fleurs de Cédrat: some florals, but really an EdC; Creed Royal Water: ditto; Cartier Déclaration Eau Généreuse: brings out the cologne notes while keeping the Déclaration signature; Colonia Assoluta: Livelier than AdP Colonia; Eau du Sud: very nice Goutal, with mediterranean green notes; Eau de Cartier Concentrée: somewhat peppery, but a true EdC; Eau Sauvage: an all-time classic with variations in green notes and bottom notes; Monsieur de Givenchy: EdC with tenacious bottom notes; Concentrée d'Orange Verte: green with peppermint; Bouquet Impérial: R&G's best EdC; Mugler Cologne: pretty OK, a little soapy. In general, I like EdC in EdT strength with interesting green topnotes and some reinforcement in the basenotes. Too much other stuff, though, can ruin the "cologne" accord: e.g., I admire Eau d'Hermès, but it's too spicy in the middle notes for me to perceive it as a cologne. Some florals and light lavender don't usually ruin the effect, though. Great topic! I'd like for others to weigh in on this thread. Answer: I'm sure there has been a thread or two... but no matter. I love: Crown Perfumery Eau de Quinine Guerlain Shalimar Eau de Cologne - dry, leathery with accents of chocolate Gres Quiproquo - surprisingly longlasting (must be the civet) Yardley English Fine Cologne Guerlain Eau de Coq Comme des Garçons Cologne Dior Eau Sauvage Guerlain Eau de Cologne Imperiale Muelhens 4711 Cologne Rochas Eau de Rochas pour Femme Rochas Eau de Rochas pour homme Answer: The new Chanel Eau de Cologne smells great, and should last a good ten minutes. Arlington by D.R. Harris is a wonderful cologne. I want to try the Comme de Garcons colognes too (there's like 5 of them I think)...but haven't had a chance to sniff them yet Answer: Eau Sauvage says it's an eau de toilette. I know that's funny, but that's what it says on the bottle. - we're defining colognes as having 2-5% aromatic compounds * Perfume extract: 20%-40% aromatic compounds * Eau de parfum: 10-30% aromatic compounds * Eau de toilette: 5-20% aromatic compounds * Millisimies - ? * Others - ? Answer: Two to add to the excellent responses so far. Acqua di Genova (separate thread about this in the last fortnight) - those sparkling eau de cologne top notes on a rose/jasmine/musk base. Seriously good. Parfum d'Empire - Eau de Gloire, unusual - the classic top notes are on a liquorice heart and sturdier base of tobacco. I'd still class it as an eau de cologne because of the bergamot, lemon, neroli, lavender accord, but an interesting twist in the mid and basenotes.
