Chandler Burr on "Ghost Flowers" in today's NYTimes
Question:
If you want to know more about how freesia (and other in-extractables!) is/are re-created, try this thread: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/25/style/tmagazine/25tghost.html Answer: Thanks so much. That was interesting. Answer: Thank you so much for adding the link. I love to read these articles. I am not so sure about two of his statements. One that mimosa is not extracted from the flowers? Is this true? He states it comes from the leaves and twigs, nice scents, but not the flowers. mimosa fragrances actually can smell like the flowers. Are there truely no flowers in them? I would like to know. Also, he states that ireis have no scent. I have grown iris and they do indeed have a frangrance. While it is true some species have no scent, some varieties of bearded iris are actually quite strong smelling. Especially the purple ones! It is a warm golden stained glass aroma. Answer: So correct me if I am hallucinating, please. But is Mr Burr saying that all the "lavender" in perfumery is by and large a laboratory recreation? mmmmmkay..... **scratches all pictures of French lavender fields from cranial databank** Answer: There were so many errors and gross generalizations i don't know where to start. "... to make a perfume out of Coco’s favorite flower, the camellia, which has no smell." You have got to be kidding me. There are close to 250 species and about 3000 cultivars and /or hybrids of Camellias and many of those are scented. Wich Camellias have you been sniffing Mr. Burr? "And that’s pretty much it." No way... -bites tongue-. Answer: Originally Posted by jaelynn So correct me if I am hallucinating, please. (and the thinking goes: if you haven't smelled the difference it's because they are as good, if not better than, naturals) Mistakes not withstanding....(which would be kinda curious if they pop up in every article, now wouldn't it?) I am getting the feeling he is waiting on getting a proposition from a big synth-producing firm to write a book about them or something..... Call me cynical. But that's what I "get". Sorry...
