Spanish Leather any good? Who amkes best SL???
Question:
I don't hear anyone talking about the fragrance "Spanish Leather" by people like Trufitt and Hill, Trumper's, or Taylor of Old Bond St???
These are very popular in my shaving forum. Any opinions???

Answer:
I'm not a leather expert at all, but I do love Trumper's version! Almost soapy in character, not at all heavy or musty. Very gentlemanly and sophisticated, only leather so far I consider actually buying!

Welcome to the forum!
So far, my Spansih Leather experience is limited to Trumper's version--which reminds me of very expernsive, rose and/or violet-scented soap. Although it has a distinct floral character, it somehow manages to avoid being cloying or overly sweet. Definitely a formal scent, it cries out for a tuxedo (or at least a fine suit). One of the most beautiful fragrances I've ever encountered. Highly recommended.

Answer:
welcome to the dark side, resistance is futile, you will empty your wallet aquiring scents lol.
Seriously welcome! The only spanish leather I have had experiance with is trumpers as well. I love it. Get a decant first though. No need to buy it blind. See if you like it. Spritz then sniff an hour later. Try it on another day and see if you still like it before making a buy. I have learned that lesson the hard way by buying blind or after only trying a sample tube.

I got a sample from them, and i liked it very much. Also, my sister liked it A LOT, which means it is atleast on women's radar.
That's always a plus.

Welcome to the Basenotes! My sentiments exactly. Somewhat soapy. Classy. I get little or no floral notes. I too have gotten compliments when wearing this.
And welcome Upstarter!

Answer:
I prefer Spanish Leather in Santa Maria Novella rendition - Peau d`Espagne...
That`s powerful, dark and yet misterious spicy leather!
For office I believe it`s impossible to use - because how anyone could make half-a-spritz for all over the body? Mission Impossible!!!

Answer:
Well, my nose is not developed at all. Infact, i don't even wear fragrances, but i will start to, and i want to start building a solid collection.
So is the consensus that trumper's makes the best Spanish Leather???

Answer:
I like Trumper's Spanish Leather quite a lot, but it may help when it comes to trying to figure out the whole leather business if you realize that the fact that they call it 'Spanish Leather' doesn't mean it contains leather. I can't smell any leather in it, and on their website Trumper's strongly imply that it doesn't contain any. It's rather the sort of concoction they used to use to perfume leather in days of yore, precisely in order to modify or mask the unadulterated smell of the leather itself, because they found it undesirable.
On the other hand, this would seem to be very much not the case with, for example, SMN's Peau d'Espagne. I would be extremely surprised if it did not contain actual leather. (I say 'would be' because there's no shortage of, for example, very musky and animalic musks (Madini's Black Musk is one) that contain no musk whatsoever, musk itself being illegal, of course. So who knows what's really up with very leathery leathers?)
I have no idea why or how 'Spanish' leather is supposed to be different from any other kind. I suspect it's another now-anachronistic reference to the days of travel using horses, and this practice of perfuming the leather that went with all that.

In the same vein, Persian Leather by Caswell-Massey is a really fine scent and inexpensive too.
