Guerlain is a great house. Has it had anything good in the past few years? Yes. L'Instant, while fairly weak, is an excellent scent, it just doesn't project or last. Should that have given Guerlain top honors? No. Does it matter? No. It's not a big deal guys, it just congratulates the house of Guerlain, and encourages other houses to work harder.

I've sampled the readily-available men's offerings several times over the years (Habit Rouge, Heritage, L'Instant, Vetiver) without coming close to wanting them. The most recent time, I affirmatively disliked HR, but mostly these fragrances are simply ones that seemed nice enough, but that I knew I would rarely wear. Vetiver, I think, I may simply passed by on the way to more "heavy-duty" interpretations of vetiver.
I think it may be that these fragrances tend to be too rounded and "unassailable" for my taste, as if they were composed not to lose, rather than to win.

An insightful line! I think I would describe that same effect as simply conservative. They are not radical, or outrageous, or shocking — but thay are reliable in a very positive way. They would be appropriate to wear in many situations, and they will be likely to fit in. There are not too many fragrances that one could describe in this way. Class — that is what Guerlain have aimed for, and they have mostly hit it.

Guerlain earned 99 % of their fame as a family enterprise before 1950. As concerns masculine fragrances: Aside from Jicky, the truly big ones were created after 1965 and before 1998.
