my introduction to Serge Lutens perfumes - Page 7
Question:
it hasn't been explained to me what is considered layering. Do you actually spray over the scent on your skin? do you wear several different scents with no reall system as to %'s etc? do you mix scents in a bottle, let them sit, experiment till you have what you like?
If it's wearing more than one scent, then I layer. I started the day with Nicolais New York on my neck and the back of my left hand. Sprayed Guerlain's Heritage on the back of my right hand, since a thread yesterday compared Heritage to New York. I like New York better. It has a big welcoming aura right out of the bottle. There's Angelique Encens from a Creed sample on my right upper wrist.
Am I layered?

Am I layered? More duo-ed, but yes! as it is the sillage that counts... Do you actually like the way they smell together (rather than comparing them one on on)? I suppose the real point is the intention, maybe.

There are several ways of 'layering' scent and many of us are doing it everyday...:
  • Using a scented soap, showergel, deoderant and / or body cream with a different (hopefully complimentary) scent before using your chosen SotD. Example: Using Paco Rabanne XS pour homme showergel / deoderant spray before wearing Guerlain Heritage or Creed Himalaya.
  • Wearing different scents on different parts off the body for a combined sillage effect. Example: Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan applied to chest and neck with Thierry Mugler B*Men applied to inner elbows and wrists.
  • Applying 1, 2 or 3 scents (more would be way too much) directly on top of each other to experience the scent mix directly on the skin as well as in the sillage. Some prefer each scent to have 'settled' / dried down a little before applying the next, while others like to apply all at the one time. I usually limit it to two but have successfully worn three before. Example: Fendi Uomo + Serge Lutens Musc Koublai Khan + Serge Lutens Daim Blond applied one on top of the other. NB: This is easier to control if the colognes used are of different textures or applied in different ways. Example: Fendi Uomo (dabbed on from sample vial) + Serge Lutens Musc Koublai Khan (rollerball decant) + Serge Lutens Daim Blond (spritzed lightly).
  • Blended before application. This for me is moving into the realm of perfumery blending but is a good way of creating a synergy between scents ahead of application to the skin. I find that some perfume combos need more than just an hour or so to meld together before revealing their beauty properly on the skin. Example: Dior Eau Sauvage + Fendi Uomo may clash applied together on the skin but if mixed and allowed to mellow for 2 weeks before application the result is a wonderful hybrid / synergistic blend that brings out the best in both of them.
I do hope this encourages many more of you to embrace layering and enjoy the ability to truly create your own, unique scent.

Answer:
If that's layering, what I've done so far is compare 2 scents and test one. As far as sillage there's sillage but it making me cross eyed.
There are too many decants and samples here at Casa Fredricktoo plus I have attention deficit disorder and I haven't even begun to use my wrists and inner elbows.
I could end today having tried 10 scents (there's a setup - knock it outta the park)
When I'm wearing from a bottle, I like to bask in the aroma. I paid for it.
samples and decants I also forget what's what. I've sniffed and said "what the hell is that?" I didn't remember putting it on.

Ambre Sultan+Daim Blond+Arabie
Ambre Sultan+Un Bois Vanille+Douce Amère
Ambre Sultan+Fleurs d'Oranger+Datura Noir
Ambre Sultan+Daim Blond+Clair de Musc
Fleurs de Citronnier+A la Nuit+Sa Majesté la Rose
Fleurs de Citronnier+Clair de Musc+Santal Blanc
Fleurs de Citronnier+Fleurs d'Oranger+Datura Noir

So it seems that the two SAs did neither invent warm water nor do something outrageous. Resurrecting the thread to say:
Of course this is absolutely correct and I had been meaning to say so myself. Two or three people now on this thread have read the interview and that's enough. There is no need for Lady in Black to prove her "allegations". That was only posted to ignite a flamewar.
After all the people who have been "outraged" by this do not prove *their* credentials either, right? ;-)
In fact I am amazed that you Basenotes people have been so believing of certain individuals/individual when they come on and say whatever!!
