Question:
Find some wormwood (Artemisia Absinthium).
Rip off a handfull of foliage and quickly crush it in your fingers while bringing it up to your nose.
Now, breath in deeply.
THAT is the smell of the elusive scent of my desire.
(and no, it is NOT the smell of genuine absinthe; they are not the same at all. The foliage of wormwood releases a fresh, aromatic, intensely sweet odor upon initial crushing.)
Griff

Answer:
First, it should have a strong and lasting earthy and dry vetiver note.
Second, it should have agarwood and leather note, supported by castoreum, and some spices (cardamom, pepper, cinnamon and even cumin are OK for me). Iris could be good in top or heart too - but in this concoction it would die almost without a trace...
Top notes should not be annoyingly fresh, not watery and not too sweet. Frankly, top notes should be leather with artemisia, cypress or sparkling jasmine...
Base could be with civet. I like that stink and it goes good with jasmine, and castoreum...
Allover impression: very dry and lasting rich minimalistic vetiver-leather-oud scent giving The All Blacks impression. Other notes will be used only for rounding that beast.
Not aggressive but smells like a statement. Not rude, but has a sandpaper feeling like a cat`s tongue...
Sillage - yes. But in 0.5m zone.
It should be packed in simple black glass rectangular bottle. Maybe some golden or red-yellow sparks in the black massive in a manner of sunstone.
Atmosphere - manager of NZ All Blacks gives some kicks to his team before the important game they must win whatever... Not much words, but every sound weights a ton. He gives a mental fuel to team by his words.
In other words - take Or Black by Morabito (which I LOVE!) and update it by Vetiver and Agarwood.

Hey griff, this is spooky! Independently of what you have written here, I just wrote this some minutes ago in Roboyogi's thread about unique scents:
"But yatagan is wonderful, it really reminds me of walking along the shoreline in the latter part of summer, reaping off some flowers from the wormwood that grows there and smelling them. How I always have loved that smell. Very bitter but fascinating."
Have you tried yatagan? If you haven't you definately should!

Answer:
One more thing.
Anyone familiar with the flower Common tansy? It's leaves, if crushed, gives a harsh smell which reminds me a bit of the smell of wormwood but it is much more dissonant and agressive! I think this would be a great scent, albeit very provocative!

Hi geastrum
I have and love Yatagan and although there are some similar qualities between it and wormwood, they are not the same aroma. I also don't recall what the wormwood flower smells like but the foilage is what I remember, vividly. I have never found a bottled scent that resembles this fabulous scent.
Griff

Answer:
Well, to be honest I mean the foilage too, the flowers are pretty small and what I get in my hand when stripping a plant is a mixture of leaves and flowers. Anyway, please tell us if you ever find a scent that captures this better than yatagan!
Ps. My 100th post. Hooray! ;D

Oh, yes! This smell + impregnated pinewood and wet soil and sand would be the delicious scent of "Swedish countryside railtrack in the rain". But when they are overbloomed they release a slightly nauseating scent, if I remember correctly.

Answer:
Vinterdroppe!
Beautiful, beautiful! Let's distill it this summer!

Answer:
Geastrum & Vinterdroppe:
Eau d'Swedish countryside railtrack wouldn't be complete without Epilobium angustifolium
But would it work together with the Wormwood?

I am guessing a railtrack fragrance would be best suited for a scented candle *
