The Ultimate Rose Perfume ? - Page 6
Question:
Unfortunately, today's commercially grown roses, at least those offered for sale in my area, seem to have lost their wonderful scent to a great extent. Perhaps a tradeoff for uniformity and shipability but distressing nonetheless. The heritage-types, grown at home, still have the oomph though..

Answer:
Natural Roses with intense smells have a short life-time in the vase. That's another reason why florists do not want to sell them. For the garden there is still a variety of old and new fragrant roses available.
I feel addicted to the Rose perfumes Patou makes but would be afraid of their sillage to really wear any of them. For similar reasons I wouldn't wear Aoud Rose Petals, or even Aoud Rose Damaskus, IMO the finest among the Montale feminines. After 5 minutes into Paris, however, I get this green, fresh aura of a rose bush in the garden plus freshly cut lawn - that's why I feel free to spray it generously in the summer, an alternative to Eau Sauvage and Eau de Rochas (hommme)! I just wish the bottle didn't have this very pink label .

Answer:
I'm very fond of Penhaligon's Hammam Bouquet and C&S #88.
I tested Voleur de Roses yesterday, and am not as enamored of it as some.

Answer:
from garden to vase to table if the roses are clipped properly and water is changed daily they'll last as long if not longer than florists roses. The florists roses have suffered the same fate as the tomato. They're not bred for fine scent, they're bred to travel long distances and withstand the shock of being cut and thrown around.
Grow tomatos in the garden and try to find anything like it in a supermarket even when they're in season. There certain seed strains for tomatos that have the perfect skins and texture. Hothouse tomatos have skin like leather. We get better tomatos from Israel but they cost a fortune.
Red roses are naturally the most robust and most fragrant, also best at fighting disease. How they managed to breed a weakly scented red amazes me.
Has Malle's Une Rose been mentioned? I've never smelled a more beautiful, life like rose scent. (actually it looks like I described this over a month ago. I have a good memory, it's just short)

Answer:
I think that Rose scents, like any other fragrances, are extremely polarizing. Test wisely from the recommendations recieved here, one man's trash...

Originally Posted by fredricktoo Has Malle's Une Rose been mentioned? I've never smelled a more beautiful, life like rose scent. I've read many comments on Une Rose. Most of them complimentary. But this one is nail on! It will be my third summer with Une Rose, and I have enjoyed comparing this perfume with garden impressions. I believe nothing can be more perfect than nature, and Une Rose is the perfume closest to it.
I also know Annick Goutal's Rose Absolue. Our dear Tigrushka had mentioned it before(2004/05) and I obtained a sample hen. It achieves a similar effect. To choose between the two isn't easy. Une Rose appears to be a tad less refined and maybe therefore I prefer it to any other. Rose Absolue is must try and worth the experience anyway!
More rose stem and leaves than flower seem to have inspired Sheldrake / Lutens in the making of Sa Majestée la Rose. I am crazy enough to recommend it for men who would consider a half-way wearable rose. It does have a greenish sillage. An easy application is advisable for all of these. You do get quite some sillage for your money!

Answer:
Each time I have sampled Rose Poivree from The Different Company
I have enjoyed it. I would consider this a very wearable rose fragrance
for men. It has much of the same pepper kick as Caron's Poivre.
