It is very smokey and woodsy; like a campfire of expensive wood with amber at the heart...yum! Passage D'Enfer is ok but not an incense IMO. Very tame & doesn't last long on me. I get a bigger bang for the buck elsewhere. I was at the Mall last night, and unfortunately, the dinner took longer than I planned, so I only had twenty minutes to run into Neiman Marcus to test, before the Mall closed.(definitely not enough time, but couldn't resist) I sprayed on, Passage again for old time sake, and STILL on me, it smelled soapy, I guess that is the combo of the lily & the incense. No likey on me. Sprayed Elixir des Merveilles, it was different, but smelled like orange soda. Nothing smelled that good on me. Damn that body chemistry of mine lately. Everything USED to smell so pretty on me...now just select things...boring!
Do you find Messe de Minuit musty smelling? I tried it once, and didn't get what you got. (which was much better for you) The way you described it, smokey, woodsy, ambery, would be heaven for me. I just didn't get that...my son liked it better, but I'm still fascinated with it, for some odd reason. On some other perfume forum, someone mentioned, that Sophia Loren uses this scent, and it's one of her favorites? I find that hard to believe, but scent is in the nose of the beholder. Who knows, she might be a closet Goth...just kidding.

Answer:
Dolly, what did you get instead? I ask because it is very incensey and I find it hard to imagine what else you would get.

I didn't get anything, but I'm itching to buy some new stuff. I've been thinking of getting Flower Oriental by Kenzo for the past few months. It's a mild Japanese type of incense scent. Nothing too over the top, not exciting either, but something I could wear that would satisfy my incense urge, but not too offensive to wear. Like I said, I'm not sure what to buy yet, but I know it's going to be a couple of new things.

Dolly, I don't mean to be a pest. Are you talking about Etro MdM? And, if so, did you use a tiny amount or a pretty good area of coverage, back of hand or what ever? I just can't imagine that you wouldn't find it pretty strong. Whether you like it or not is another matter.

Yes, I'm talking about Etro MdM, I didn't say it wasn't strong enough, I said, I didn't get the wonderful notes that you so enjoyed. All I got was some incense & a "musty" smell. Would like to try again.

Answer:
Dolly, Yes to me it was a distinctly firewood or campfire smell. It reminded me of being in Colorado for the first time when I was young. In the cool mountain air when the smell of burning pine is in the air and you sit too close to the fire and it gets in your hair. The main difference (for me) was that in about 20 minutes a sweet amber note emerges and lingers. That in addition to the higher quality of the wood notes--it's more than pine I just can't put my finger on it. It smells like someone burning very expensive furniture from Tibet/Asia.
I've read that Mahogany is a good deep wood to try. Lutens Encens Et Lavande is beautiful, too, as someone said already, maybe more appealing. I got almost no lavender there but definitely a rich heady incense.
