Tabu - please enlighten me!
Question:
Recently I was talking to a man from the US who will soon be 82 years old and who faced some very glamorous times as a famous jazz musician in the biggest theatres and ball rooms. He told me that his favourite perfume ever for ladies was Tabu and he used to buy it for his wife all the time. It must have been incredibly popular in the 50ies. As I told him it was still available he was really surprised, as of course in Germany he never got around it. I have to admit that since it's not available in Germany I have never smelled it, but I know it is getting very controversial reactions. As I love everything like KL, Opium, the d'd Ispahan and so on, I suspect I should give it a try? I'm curious now - any suggestions? Answer: Oh Jazzy Lady, Tabu is the best!! Warmer and rounder than Opium - a more lady-like version of Cinnabar. Anyway, this is how she behaves on the drier skin of this "femme d'une age certaine"!! Thanks to Moondeva I re-discovered Tabu just this year and she has become my best friend!! Here in the States it is unbelievably inexpensive but PM me with your address and I will happily send you a decant! Answer: My mom wore this in the fifties, and my girlfriend has worn this for decades. I haven't sniffed it in a while, but I remember it to be along the lines of Youth Dew, and is rich & deep, if you like that kind of scent. For the money, it's worth trying if you do. Answer: I love Dana Tabu! To me it is a phenomenal classic very similar to Lagerfeld KL pour elle and the equally amazing Jean Desprez Bal a Versailles. I have the EDT which is powerful enough to be EDP. I think if this was repackaged as a Serge Lutens it would be one of the best sellers. It used to be a winter favourite but now I also enjoy it in spring / summer layered with orange blossom or soft citrus (Jo Malone, Avon Naturals, TBS Satsuma). Definitely worth a try. Decant and dab, decant and dab. Answer: [quote=moondeva;997050]I love Dana Tabu! It is very similar to Opium, but where there is something just too heavy and heady in Opium, Tabu is simply satisfyingly rich, deep and sultry. On me it has a lovely boozy note that I find positively addictive. And soooo inexpensive! Answer: Thank you so much all you wonderful gals for your input. And to you, Taolady, for your generous offer. Will email you! Since with all your exquisite tastes and the very low price I took the "risk" of an unsniffed buy -I have purchased a bottle of edt on ebay and will give you my impression as soon as I have it. Answer: Here in the US, you can pick up a large bottle of Tabu in any drugstore for about ten dollars. This surprises me because it has so many great notes and smells expensive. I don't know why it is classed in with some things that last about as long as it takes to get out of the store. But there are some great cheaper buys, just have to hunt around.
