Declaration has a dirty element in it that I don't perceive in Terre d'Hermes, but they are definitely related.

I have and like all three very much. Yes, I guess they are somewhat similar, in part by virtue of sharing the same perfumer. However, each is noticeably different to my nose in ways that could be perceived as subtle. Terre d'Hermès has the sulfurous grapefruit and mineralic notes that are relatively matched by the intensity, though different in character, that fir notes give to Déclaration (juniper and cedar). Both share bitter orange in the topnotes, but to my nose this is more apparent in Déclaration, and this scent also features a heavy dose of cardamom that is absent in Terre. L'Essence de Déclaration is also a superb scent, a touch less bright than Déclaration, and with less cardamom and more polished woody notes (less juniper), including a deft use of rosewood. L'Essence has been my favorite of the three, but Terre has been coming on strongly as of late. I'm looking forward to wearing all three quite a bit with the upcoming warmer weather.

In a previous comment I mentioned that probably it is Declaration the main reason why I can't appreciate TdH. I have rather bad memories of Declaration and that would cast a very dark shadow on TdH in my brain.
