Welcome to Live Dialogue !!!

the 1st scent you fell in love with
Question:
This morning I dabbed a little of Serge Lutens Fleurs d'Oranger and something in it reminded me of Elizabeth Arden's Blue Grass. I was transported back to the 80's when I was 15. I fell in love for the first time. We met at a school's orchestra's working holiday. I played the viola, he the double bass. We were inner city young and hopeful people playing Bach and Mozart. Back home in London he found me. I remember the feeling I had in my stomach when he appeared at my front door. I was so scared my mother would find out. But he was a 'nice church' boy (haha!), so it was ok. Our love affair blossomed and he showed me how much he cared by bringing gifts. One of those gifts was Blue Grass. I had the powder and the lotion to go with it. At 15 I felt so grown up, so cultured, so spoiled wearing Blue Grass. Sadly the love affair did not continue. And me and Blue Grass? Well we departed company. I was a b***h by then and threw it out for Chanel No5. Alas! it turns out I'm a bit of a tart, leaving a string of faithful lovers behind because No5 has been ditched too for Tabac Blond. No matter how tarty I am I will never forget Blue Grass.
If anyone can tell me the notes it embodies I would be grateful.

Answer:
Actually the first scent I ever bought was Chanel no 5 at a school trip to France.I was 16.But soon I decided that it was a bit too strong for me , and then i totally fell for Aqua di Gio.It was my signature for a few years.Really loved it!Then I got tired of that one troo and I moved on to other scents.Actually I smelled ADG on the bus the other day.A young girl had litterally drown herself in it....I'm sorry to say it made me sligthly nauseous Well, nice as long as it lasted.

Answer:
mochachoc, what a beautiful post! I'm a sucker for first love stories, not having really had one myself (I am happily attached, but I was a very pragmatic dater...and never had that kind of heart-pounding experience).
The first scent I ever bought for myself was Ellen Tracy....but even then, I don't think I 'committed' to it. I started buying fragrance as soon as I could afford it, and I never had a lasting relationship with any of them (not in a signature scent capacity, at least).

Unfortunately heart pounding love affairs come with heart pounding break-ups. Give me pragmatism.

Answer:
When I was 16 I had a Saturday job at Boots. It was pre-Christmas and I was put on the perfume counter to start with. (I know, I know, it explains a lot doesn't it!). Diorissimo was the first I fell in love with and bought, but I also fell for Mitsouko, and had a sample of Ivoire I wore a fair bit too.
When I turned 18 and went to university I felt I needed something more sophisticated than Diorissimo so bought the Mitsouko. That was my signature scent for the next 10 years!

Answer:
L'Air du Temps was my first fragrance love, back when I was in college. I saw ads for it when I was in Paris and bought it in parfum form when I got home.

Answer:
What a great thread! Thanks Chocolate Malted (!!! Early Alzheimer's???) for the thought, and the very well written story. (Where would we be without you romantics? The world has enough pragmatists!!)
I grew up in a slightly unusual nuclear family - my Mother (glamour personified), her Mother and my beloved Grandfather, aka Daddy, and a brisk succession of live-in housekeepers. Lotsa entertaining in a NYC townhouse and later on a home on Long Island.
First impression (I am maybe five): Little Mother (Mama) at her dressing table spraying on a cloud of something heavenly - which, as soon, as she had left, I did too!! Some spankings ensued.
What else? Mitsouko!! (Worth every minute of it!) Still in my stable!

Answer:
Great thread and great stories!
I think I was about 17 or so and back then, Yugoslavia was an economically destroyed country, poor and demoralized. Young people felt cut out from the rest of the world, aliented, hopeless and desperate. Others had alcohol, even drugs, but I, I had my books and magazines. It was my way of escaping from the harshness of the reality.
My dad was in politics then, fighting against the regime, giving some hope to people. He went on trips to Belgrade (capital of Serbia/Yugoslavia) very often. Somehow, between protests, demonstration, his work in the Parliament, appearances on local TV stations, he would always, ALWAYS have time to buy me my favorite magazines(Cosmo and Marie Claire in english). At that time, it was so hard to find them and one could only buy them in Belgrade, not to mention that they were considered a luxury.
I think that's how I started learning about perfumes and thanks to those magazines I had hope that one day I'll have my chance!
In one of those Cosmo's I first smelled Shalimar, the first perfume I fell in love with! I thought it was the most beautiful, sexiest, the most mysterious, warmest perfume ever! Smelling it used to feel like a dream, sweet and mesmerizing. Shalimar was a symbol of luxury, beauty and good life. This perfume-strip ad was a real treasure for me. I don't know how many nights had I fallen asleep inhaling its heavenly scent. I had dream, it wasn't big, but at least I had one- someday I'll own Shalimar.
Ten years later, I received Shalimar EDP as a present. Guess from who! My dad.

Answer:
When I was 13 my Mom bought me a bottle of White Shoulders and I absolutely hated it. I decided I would find my own fragrance and thats how I fell in love with Chanel No. 19. I have not worn it in years but I have been missing it lately so I think I need to at least invest in a decant and see if we are still compatable.

Answer:
Oh my what a memory lane trip! Blue Grass was definitely one of my favourites, but it wasn't my first. My very first, and the one fragrance I wore from a roll-on and from solid perfume oil, was an Avon scent called Sweet Honesty. I loved it, and they discontinued it (story of my life!).
But Blue Grass...oh that was yum.
Do they still do Blue Grass? Please say it hasn't been discontinued, I'm feeling the urge to reminisce...
Clemmie
PS Earliest fragrance ever - even before Sweet Honesty, was 4711. My mum gave me a little sample bottle and I thought I was so grown up. I think I was about 5 or 6...
