Strong(er) sandalwood frags
Question:
Hey guys I have gotten a liking recently for sandalwood frags, but the only thing I find kinda dissappointing is that the sandalwood scent is very close to the skin with all of them and doesnt project very well or diesnt last very long in the scent.....
I like Santal Noble the best, but still the same complaints as above....Floris santal smells nothing like sandalwood to me...tam dao is too light and hugging to the skin to project....and Play the Lion is good but the note doesnt last long enough....any reccomendations on a good sandalwood frag that lasts and the sandalwood scent is strong and projects well and is not hugging to the skin...?

Answer:
Have you ever tried Geo F. Trumper's Sandalwood?

Answer:
I agree with you completely about Santal Noble and Tam Dao. I love both, but wish they projected more. My only suggestion to try the Art of Shaving Sandalwood. It isn't similar to the other two, is pretty unique, and projects much more than those. It did take me multiple wearings to start liking it though, it is pretty distinct.

Answer:
Art of Shaving is quite powerful and pure (I do not like it, personally). Villoresi's Sandalwood is my favorite, not a sillage monster certainly, but will get you noticed. Marco just mentioned Floris Sandalwood (not Eau de Santal).

Answer:
I'm surprised - I find Tam Dao to be very strong and I always have to use a light trigger finger with it to not smother myself.
I give extremely high marks to Trumpers Sandalwood Cologne, which is my only other sandalwood along with Tam Dao. Trumpers projects very well and lasts for ages, but it's not so "pure" of a sandalwood. Lot's of warm spices mixed in

Answer:
Interesting timing as I was just talking about this fragrance on the "biggest u-turn" thread, but I always smell LOTS of Sandalwood in Hermes' Bel ami.
It is also one that you can generally find on sale and is definitely worth a try.

Answer:
Tam Dao!!!
The projection is subtle but deep.

Answer:

It's not in the nature of sandalwood to project. Sandalwood is a basenote, which means it has a denser and heavier molecular structure. This is why it's a basenote and why it last longer than top and middle notes, which by their very nature tend to have lighter, less dense molecular structures that makes them evaporate quicker than something like sandalwood. It's this difference that also gives them a greater diffusivity, the molecules taking to the air quicker and immediately because they're lighter. Most basenotes tend not to have diffusivity because of this reason despite the fact that they have longevity. The diffusivity of lighter oils, of course, means that they are more immediately present to the nose but also that they exhaust themselves more quickly. Natural lemon oil and natural grapefruit oils are a classic illustration of this principle.
By definition, it's impossible to ever find a natural smelling sandalwood oil or predominantly sandalwood fragrance with significant diffusivity.
