First Niche/Creed: Reccomends? - Page 2
Question:
Darker woods? Santos concentree . Give GIT a chance too. IT may not be the most 'different' smelling but in the long run its one of the most impressive of the Creed line IMHO, a good bottle of GIT has much pleasant surprises to offer. I will also recommend OV, OS and Himilaya.

Answer:
you can get some good prices for kors on ebay,

Answer:
Dark, and/or woody ?

Try these Creeds:
Ambre Canelle, Bois Du Portugal, Baie De Genievre and Santal Imperial

As TheGiraffeMan said, dont just focus on Creed - you need to try stuff from L'Artisan and Serge Lutens as well (I dont think Frederic Malle has any dark or woody frags).

Answer:
Bois du Portugal is a good choice from Creed. Have you considered Bel Ami from Hermes (leathery woods), Heritage by Guerlain or Zino Davidoff? They all have the subsatnce that you seem to be looking for. Happy hunting!

Answer:
My recommendations:
Royal English Leather by Creed (wearing it today actually...not my favorite Creed which is, Silver Mountain Water, but it does the job nicely)
Jaisalmer by Comme de Garcons (part of the Incense series)
Avignon by Comme de Garcons (part of the Incense series)
Comme de Garcons 2 Man by Comme de Garcons (smoky, woody - it reminded me of standing in front of a burning pile of leaves in the forest, in winter)
Burning Leaves by CB I Hate Perfume (the name says it all...quite smoldering and so very realistic)
Terre d' Hermes (my favorite scent that debuted in 2006)

One of the problems I have with a lot of the Niche/Creed fragrances is their cost. No, I'm not cheap, if I feel that something has the value to me I'll gladly spend the money. Where I've got the problem is spending 3 to 4 times more to get a fragrance that I like less then something far less expensive. My taste in fragrances is very much along the same lines as yours, the more masculine scents.
Bois du Portugal is a really solid fragrance, I owned it for a while but ended up swapping it away because I just preferred other fragrances. Cost was not the issue as I had purchased some Bois du Portugal already, it just did not measure up in my eyes to the other fragrances in my wardrobe. So what I'm saying is don't get carried away on getting Niche/Creed fragrances. I'm not in any way bashing Niche/Creed fragrances, if you find you really like it, by all means get it. What I'm saying is that rather then going out looking specifically to get a Niche/Creed fragrance, look to get fragrances you like, some may end up being Niche/Creed fragrances.
What I would suggest you look at are the following fragrances:
- Santos Concentrée (1982) by Cartier
- Polo Crest (1991) by Ralph Lauren
- Yatagan (1976) by Caron
- Polo (1978) by Ralph Lauren
- Bel Ami (1986) by Hermès
- Cumming (2004) by Alan Cumming
- Givenchy Gentleman (1974) by Givenchy

Answer:
A few you might like that haven't been mentioned:
Mark II by Jaguar (hard to find)
Epicea by Creed - if you like a strong resinous-piney note, and Tabarome Millésime (not extremely woody, ginger, a little tobacco, very gentlemanly) (I second Baie & Bois du Portugal in particular, also )
Lutens Santal de Mysore
Aramis Havanna, of course

Answer:
I stupidly tried Erolfa today without reading down the opinions people had posted and checking what was in it. Sure enough, that harsh chemically salty, supposedly 'aquatic' smell predominated strongly as it does for me with GIT, Himalaya, Millesime Imperial. It's Ambergris (that's the main common thing in these 4). Maybe you'll find you like your sample of Erolfa, in which case you'll probably like the ones above. But if you don't, there are some great ones with no (or almost no) Ambergris.
Try, as others have said, Bois du Portugal, Original Vetiver, the Tabaromes, Royal Delight, Baie de Genevre. All good and unusual. For wierd, try Cuir de Russie. I guarantee nobody else will smell the same!

Something like CDG 2 Man or Gucci PH could also work. It all depends on how woody you really want to go here. If money is no obstacle, then I would also look at Vetiver Extraordinaire by FM. Fantastic vetiver scent that is rugged and manly and has a somewhat woody air about it.
Bois De Portugal and the like are worth trying, but given that you mentioned formality as a hinderance in one of your descriptions it could end up being a problem here. Guerlain Heritage is another one that could work for you, but that too is a bit on the formal side. I'll second The Giraffe's recommendations. All of them. I'll also add Le Labo Vetiver 46, which has vetiver buried somewhere in the dark woody mix. It's in the same vein as CdG 2 Man and Gucci PH. Diptyque's Tam Dao is also worth testing.
