Question:
I really love the smell of this straight from the bottle BUT as it hits the skin it goes terribly wrong!!
Are there any similar frags to this with quality and staying power?

My favorite well priced and quality Musk is Kiehl's Original Musk. Helmut Lang eau de Cologne is fantastic, if you can find it.
Serge Lutens Muscs Koublaï Khän is sublime as is Musc Frederick Malle's Musc Ravageur.

Agreed on the Kiehls Musk suggestion. It's straight musk, nothing more, nothing less. It's very nice.
Musc Ravageur is AWESOME too, but is a whole different league than Jovan Musk.

I'll third the Kiehl's suggestion. It's inexpensive (you can find it for $20 or so pretty easily), and for me it draws compliments.
