Question:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/fashion/t...459965909.html The average Aussie woman has $725 worth of unwanted clothing lurking in her wardrobe, according to a recent survey commissioned by eBay. Women beat their male counterparts hands down, who have on average just $372.00 worth of clothes they no longer wear in their closets. Most women admitted the primary reason they did not wear the clothes any more was that they no longer fit into them or realised they didn't actually like them that much. More than 25 per cent of men surveyed were bored with their clothes, compared with 18 per cent women. Updating their wardrobes to suit the seasons was another top reason for people adding to the pile of their unwanted clothes. There's little doubt that women are the biggest clothes hoarders, with each having at least 24 items they no longer want, compared with only 14 items for men. The other interesting finds of the survey were: - 50 per cent of women admitted owning three or more unwanted pairs of shoes - Women have two pairs of jeans they don't wear, whilst the average bloke only has one Not only do we hoard clothing that no longer fits us, many Australians have clothes in their closets they have never even worn. At least 85 per cent of women admitted they own clothes that still have tags on them. Yet, more than half the women surveyed bought new clothes every season. NSW residents have the most closet cash with the average person admitting to $637 worth of clothing they no longer wear, versus the national average of $548.53, while 44 per cent of Victorians plan to buy jeans in the next month compared to only 35 per cent on average in other states. Among the most unloved wardrobe items is the humble t-shirt. The average female owns five t-shirts she does not wear, while men have three. Despite this, 47 per cent of Aussie women still plan to purchase another t-shirt in the next month. While many of those surveyed said they would spend the extra money raised by selling unwanted clothing in predictable ways like holidays or adding to savings, every one in 10 Australian confessed that given the extra cash, they would spend it on more clothing! What's the main reason you have unwanted or yet-to-be-worn clothes in your wardrobe? I find most of the clothes I own that I've yet to wear, were impulse buys, mostly purchased from chain stores like Supre or Sportsgirl who are too trend-based. Therefore a lot of these pieces end up dating very quickly, even before I've had the opportunity to wear them. Remember the Roland Mouret copies? I've got one I only wore once. It's so key to be aware of specific shapes, prints and cuts, like bubble hems, that won't stand the test of time. Other surplus items in my wardrobe I've worn to death for an entire season, so that by next season I'll be sick of the sight of it. Basically, fashion is fickle, if it wasn't I wouldn't have all these unwanted items. But there are many items in my wardrobe that I've owned and worn for years, I just need to be more conscious of what I buy. Answer: I suspect I have much more unworn clothing than the average person including a pair of burgundy patent Marc Jacobs heels that the boyfriend gave me for my birthday a year and a half ago and some brown and bronze manolos from the Myer History Making Sale a year ago, not to mention lots and lots of clothes that I've bought and haven't worn, mostly because theyre more special occasion/going out clothes or clothes that are outside my comfort zone uniform of a knit, a skirt/tailored pants and heels. I tend to buy classic things so I dont have as many 'dated' clothes, although I do have a Galaxy dress copy which I've only worn a handful of times, but I still love it and will still wear it. Answer: Usually the cheap, impulse buys are the things I don't wear.At present I have a bag of **** waiting to be disposed of . BTW I would have thought the Roland M Galaxy dress or copies thereof, would be classic silhouettes rather than trend? Answer: Hence why I love Ebay. I just sell my unloved/unwanted/space wasting/impulse buy clothes and turn em into cash!! They were quite the uniform last winter, now they've all but disappeared. Answer: I have a lot of clothes I've never worn because: a) I don't feel like I have the right occasion for them. It's not even so much that I buy really dressy things, it's just that I don't go out much at night anyway, and some of my nice clothes I wouldn't waste on teen house parties b) Going to a school with uniform, I have more clothes than weekends to wear them on . See, I do regular shopping, which I can be quite restrained in. But then I go vintage/market/op-shopping, which I can never restrain in. I use the philosophy "I mightn't need it now, but I really like it, and if I leave it for a month I can't expect it to still be here". On top of that, I love to sew, so when I'm really in the mood I can whip up a new garment in half a week, adding on even MORE Answer: I love the Galaxy Dress... I wear it with quite a few things and would not throw it out... In the last yr I've put on a s**tload of weight on due to some medication and I have alot of really really hot clothes that I just simply don't fit into anymore, but refuse to throw away or sell cos I'm really working hard to fit back into them... some of those items include a few pairs of tsubi, bardot, nobody jeans and endless tops Answer: Story of my life. Fortunately, I have discovered the joys of eBay. It helps me continue with the cycle of buying clothes that will not be worn Letting BNWT clothes go for less than RRP is torturous, though.
