Dying silk dress??
Question:
I have a masquerade party coming up for my 30th, and I was thinking it would be cool to dye my wedding dress a charcoal grey to make a ball gown type effect.
It is currently ivory silk. Is this feasible???
And if so, where can it be done???

Answer:
i'm sure it can be done with Dylon but you want to dye your wedding dress?! don't you want to keep it its original ivory as a memento?

Answer:
I wouldn't risk dying it myself, as I would hate to see it ruined... but I'd love the chance to wear it again rather than just having it packed away for the rest of my life, if I could get it professionally dyed to look great. I must admit the thought does make me nervous though!

Answer:
could you wear it to the party as it is and match your accessories? it'd be awful if it went wrong, or the wrong colour...then again professionally done it could be ok. a bit risky thought

Answer:
Charcoal grey is a very hard colour to dye too. They don't stock this colour in Dylon so you have to mix them and even dye it several times to get to charcoal grey. I had a terrible time dying some fabric this colour.

Answer:
NO NO NO NO NO!!!! My mum still talks about how she died her wedding dress navy blue because she thought she would wear it again- huge disaster = huge regret! Please don't do it!

Answer:
The problem with dying a garment (as opposed to fabric) is that there are areas that trap the dye (seams, boning etc.). This often leads to uneven colour, PARTICULARLY with colours that show tonal depth well, such as greys.
I really wouldn't recommend it, but if you want to investigate, I would recommend going to couture dressmakers (e.g. the place that made your dress) and seeking their advice. Get a couple of professional opinions, but I think you'll find that most dressmakers will recommend against it... Sorry
Anyway, you have the excuse to buy a lovely new dress, for your 30th

Answer:
You will regret it. I had a beautiful flowing white skirt that I tried to dye dark. It came out the grossest grey colour that looked drab and lifeless. It is harder for colour to take on a finished garment that is not plain old cotton. I just threw it out a few weeks ago.
Broke my heart
xx

Answer:
Thanks everyone... I think you have confirmed for me that it isn't worth the risk... I will just have to buy myself a fab new dress!!!

Answer:
Hi Chon girl
I am planning to have my wedding dress dyed (it is also ivory silk) so I can wear it as a ball gown (no kids so won't be passing it on and it seems a waste to leave it rotting in the cupboard (it was a big ticket item!)). I have done quite a lot of research on this and would not try it myself, I have found this site which does it professionally and am just waiting to receive colour charts. Check it out...
