Quick suit question
Question:
Hey all First time suit wearer, two quick questions: 1. Is the collar of the shirt supposed to go under or above the collar of the jacket? 2. If you're wearing a long-sleeved shirt underneath, is it supposed to show at the wrists from under the jacket? TIA Answer: I am not sure if there is a right or wrong to it. But this is what I prefer: - collar going above the jacket. I find that it adds some colour to the suit. - long sleeves not showing (but that said, if the sleeves did show, I wouldn't really mind it) Also, I like tucking the shirt into the pants and wearing a belt. Answer: Different conventions for men and women. 1) I prefer to see a woman with the collar under, but it depends on the collar of your shirt - a wider one will look fine outside, but if it's just a regular collar (like on a men's shirt) it could just look scruffy. 2) I always show cuff with my suits. Always. But again, for women it might not be as big a deal. Answer: Collar: Depends on the collar! Wider collars can lay on the outside. Shorter ones can be on the inside. Sometimes I'll still have them "standing up", rather than folded down, if that makes any sense. Long sleeves: definitely have the cuffs just showing. Answer: Unless it's a featured collar, with embroidery, frills or lace, wear it under the jacket. I like sitting the collar up under my jaw line too, same goes with guys, it's a huge pet peeve for me. Unless you're John Travolta wear it under. As for cuffs, show a little not a lot. Answer: Ugh, any guy that still wears his collar outside his suit jacket deserves to hung, drawn, quartered, then shot. Answer: I always wear my shirt collar under the jacket collar... I'm not a fan of seeing collars over jackets. If you are a girl and want to wear a feature collar then wear a vest or some type of dress over your shirt.... don't team it with a suit Not too fussed with sleeves... but i think that for men it looks better if the sleeve cuffs stick out a bit Answer: I used to work in suit fittings, and the cuff should show about 2cm from under the suit sleeve. I find that this is easy for men to achieve, but most of my shirt sleeves (especially french cuffed ones) aren't long enough. As with the collars, men definitely under the suit lapels, and for women, it's more professional and conservative to go under. Usually it's the first time suit wearers who fold the shirt collar over the suit lapels. I actually rarely see this, I think most men have got the idea. However when I do... oh dear! Answer: I always always always wear the collar tucked in. Looks too contrived otherwise. And I like to have half a cm of cuff showing underneath the jacket sleeves. Also, always tuck your shirt in even when you are wearing the suit jacket!
