I love opaque stockings in winter, they look great with all the short dresses out at the moment.
However, I can't really wear short dresses to work as it's not suitable - what do you guys think of wearing them with a skirt that sits just below the knee. Is it too grandma-ish??

You could try wearing a pair of patterned stockings instead of opaques. Alannah Hill sell some nice ones

I'm with the others - patterned stockings for the 3/4 skirt.
If your skirt is knee height, I think opaque can look nice though.

I think it looks fine! I have heaps of skirts that I wear opaques with in winter, especially when I don't feel like wearing knee high boots and want to keep warm
