My hair is quite fine so it's not easy getting it to look smooth. What seems to work best for me is to tease it a little at the roots and hairspray it with head upside down. Then with my head in a normal position, I gather it up, using a bristle brush to smooth it in place.
If you end up with some "lumpy bits" after putting your elastic band in - use a tail comb on them. Basically you run the comb along the direction of your hair towards the pony, pulling slightly upwards as you go. This can save you having to re-do it!
For a super messy pony - try experimenting with dry hair + Garnier Surf Spray.

i get up, comb my hair up with my fingers and whack a hair tie around it... it's only for uni-plus i get to snooze longer

I can't remember reading where but a high profile HD once said a pony looks best in the middle of the head, in line with your eyes, no higher, particularly on an older woman. I do this and then I slacken the hair directly underneath my pony, so that there's a slight lump there if you know what I mean.

I think this was in a magazine this month.. i remember reading that too! Might give it a try today...

i have fine hair to my shoulders.
but when i straighten it and go out...then get sick of it and end up putting it up it seems to look good!

This is how I wear mine, don't want to look to bouncy.
I find mine looks best when I tie it down low at the nape of my neck, then grab the top half and pull it appart (towards my ears) so that the whole pony tail moves up my head to the position described above.
It gives it a bit of body at the top.
