Sun Rash...complete description plus questions
Question:
I'm 33 y.o. caucasion male, slightly darker complected. Growing up (on
a farm) I never got sunburn. In 1990 I went to the tanners for the
first time. The lady suggested I go 30min. Yes, I got burnt over every
part of my body. Despite that experience, I eventually returned to the
tanning beds (only periodically), but was careful not to ever burn
again. Between 1998 and 2002 I never got tanned from a bed or the sun.
In 2002 I relaxed poolside one day with spf 15. Shortly after I packed
up and went home I began to realize I was pretty severely burnt
(because I was on antibiotics). Neither experience mentioned included
a rash. Just last week I began to tan. On day one, I used a lotion
called Neurotic, went in a lay down bed (old bulbs) 4mins. and
developed itchy patches of skin on my inner thighs. I thought it was
my skin drying out. This rash developed over the span of twelve hours
and was gone in 24. The very next day, I went to tan again. Again 4
min, but with a lotion called "Citrus..." something or other. This
time, my skin was tingling before I got on the bed. I took the next
day off of tanning because the rash was back and now there were a few
tiny spots also on my trunk. I went back the day after. My rash was
gone so I went for six minutes (new bulbs) with my new lotion (Emerald
Bay tan N Tonic Tanning accelerator). While I was laying in the bed, I
could feel the rash beginning to develop on my inner thighs. Over the
course of the next 30hrs, this rash has develped to now include my
entire trunk, upper legs, butt, and everywhere else that is normally
not exposed to the sun. I have tried Benedryl, Aloe lotion, Silvadene,
and Gold Bond powder. Nothing helps. At this moment I am in a world of
indescribably intense itching. The rash feels like braille, looks like
hives, and itches like hell. The odd thing is that it does not respond
to typical anti-allergens, and that it took nearly thirty hours to
fully develop. These red bumps are not blisters, they are merely
raised patches. It looks like hives or poisen ivy. When I do itch, if
I itch lightly I get an almost euphoric sensation of relief, but as
soon as I stop it feels like that area is on fire. I am on no
medications, and am not burnt. What the hell is this and how do I
avoid it? If I take allergy meds before tanning will it help? Does
anyone have any answers? Help me, please!

Answer:
Hey cracked_leather, how are you doing? If a serious adverse
reaction results, you should be advised to consult your doctor.
Clients are advised that they may have a delayed, adverse reaction to
UV exposure like red, irritated and watering eyes or an itching skin
rash or even a sunburn. This delayed reaction can take anywhere
from less than an hour to as long as a day and a half to develop. Upon
receipt of notification of an adverse reaction, the owner/ operator
should investigate the incident and implement whatever modification is
needed. Where an injury to a person is reported to the
owner/operator by a duly qualified medical practitioner as a result of
an exposure to the tanning equipment under the owner's control, the
owner shall inform the health department immediately or any other
health authority. All such incidents shall be documented and these
documents shall be available to an officer on request. Best wishes,

Answer:
I would advise you to stop tanning altogether. You may also have to
deal with skin cancer sometime soon if you keep going.

Answer:
I've had to get a few places removed and need to get a few more looked
at from my irresponsibility years ago trying to look tan. I guess
I'm paying for it now

Answer:
admin- Me too! :-( Also, many people don't realize that sun damage,
moles, skin cancers etc., that develop now may have been caused by sun
you were exposed to 10 years ago! It affects the body for that long!
