Ask your Doctor about steroid therapy. Steroid therapy has been implicated in the development of vasculitis (inflammation of a blood or lymph vessel); however, vasculitis is seen in patients who have never recieved steroids.

Nail-fold thrombi, small infarcts on the volar surface of the hands, digital gangrene, and ulcers of the lower part of the legand the ankle are manifestations of rheumatoid vasculitis. Both sensory and motor types of neuropathy result from vasculitis of the vasa nervorum.

Vasculitis of the cranial, coronary, and mesenteric vessels has been observed. In patients where infections may be a serious complication wih marked neutropenia (leukopenia in which the decrease in white blood cells is chiefly in neutrophils), splenectomy may improve the neutropenia.

Neutropenia, however, may recur after splenectomy. The course of the arthritis is not affected by splenectomy.
