I recently went for a complete physical exam. This was the first time I visited this particular physican. I had an erection during the rectal exam phase of the physical. I was naked and it was impossible not to noticed. The Doctor did not say anything, but I was uncomfortable. That never happened to me before. I wonder if this is a common experience?

Yes, this seems to be a common occurence when the prostate is checked .I also developed a full erection whilst being examined and also dripped what looked like pre-cum during the procedure. The Docter explained this was a normal reaction.
